Nobody in their right mind would ever mistake that purse for a real gun. This isn't about the purse, it's about the TSA.

2011-12-01 10:06:27 PM
I may have mentioned this, but if you hire idiots to run your security, you don't really have much security. Or, sometimes people who work cheap may do so for good reason.

2011-12-01 10:14:48 PM
No, it's about idiots equating perception with reality.

These TSA heros are doing their best to protect us against the really, really bad Islam bad guys who would take r freedoms in a new york minute, if it wasn't for Bloomberg and his army in ny ny. god bless Bloomberg and his incredible army which is protecting my ass. Thank you sir and your legion of room temperature IQ minions.

Obviously the only correct solution is to make the government bigger and give it more powers.

There are probably many other important points that need to be and will be made in this thread, but I just want to point out that that's a really farking stupid looking purse.

Sounds like a punchline from "1000 Ways to Die." Just pause for a beat before surprise.

I wonder if she carried this purse to school. I wouldn't be at all surprised if zero tolerance rules kicked in if she did.

At any rate, someone needs to remind the TSA that you never go full retard.

It's not like real guns make any difference in killing people.

I've been assured by the NRA that you can kill as many people with a rock as you can with a semi-automatic weapon with a modified clip.

There's a Southwestern commercial where a man is excited about not paying bag fees. In his celebration he uses double finger guns. I wonder how well that would go over in actuality.

I was with her until she said a purse wasn't a weapon. Swung forcefully and those things can hurt.

I especially liked the part about the TSA saying that carrying a bag with an image of a firearm was "a federal offense." In another context, this is what Ken Kaiser and Ron Luciano have called "the Bluff Rule". This is what you pull to get more respect?? Nice job, TSA a$$hats.

Next up: TSA detains somebody with a picture of a picture of the purse in question, because it's a replica of a replica of the real thing.

Also, I loved the comment of somebody below the article: "Sounds to me like the TSA just doing their job." Precisely.

OK, I think I might have to defend the TSA here.

Replica weapons are illegal, and judging from the picture, that thing looks pretty realistic-except for being a bit small.

But a small pistol could still be a weapon. Anyone who has ever watched Pawn Stars has seen some pretty incredible miniature weapons. Would a pilot who saw that pointed at him know if it was a replica or not? Maybe-maybe not. That is why replica weapons are prohibited.

The real issue is how would you write a rule. "Well if it is really really small, then it is OK, but if it is just real small, then it is illegal". There is no practical way you could write a set of guidelines- and so the TSA is going to err on the side of caution.

That said, it probably could have been handled better. Although the woman could probably have used better judgement in her selection of fashion accessories. Personally, I think she was looking to generate a confrontation.

Ummm no. I am a High Functioning Autistic. We would look at the purse and say "Thats fake, its a purse and not a gun you can fire. No matter what you think it looks like it isn't" See we take things LITERALLY as in if its fake its fake. These people are idiots... plain and simple. They are overthinking their jobs and trying to play big man.

If she got into the cockpit with a purse, that pilot deserved to get hijacked for violating the new regulations that prohibit him from opening the cockpit door while the plane is in flight.

And if that little chicklet managed to convince everyone on board she was a terrorist and would kill everyone on board, they deserved to die. And don't give me that about "anybody could be a terrorist"--she is about as likely to be a terrorist as my 96-year old aged grandmother. You're just a jackass.

2wolves: No, it's about idiots equating perception with reality.

It's really that the idiots we hired don't actually have _anything_ to do. Seriously think it over, 911 19 hijackers tried to go through security, all made it. By the law of averages, that means the TSA's success rate at stopping hijackers is bounded around 5%. Given that, how many hijackers tried to go through security in the previous 20 years, one, two maybe. Out of how many people flying? Hundred of millions.

The TSA has no work to do because there aren't any hijackers. So they make up stuff to do.

We got what we wanted? At least when I spent the better part of a decade telling people it would come to this I was called a coward, cowardice, a traitor, traitorous, treasonous, anti-American, terrorist sympathizer, etc. So I figure if so many people would call me such horrible names over the fact that I was against this, well then this must be something we really, really wanted. Congrats, USA, you are almost a bona-fide 3rd world police state. Keep it up and we'll reach our goal ahead of schedule!!!

This country needs to get its shiat together so desperately in so many ways.
