It's kind of cute... in a horrifyingly repulsive sort of way.

It is cute, glad I'm not strange for thinking so. Not like it's a frggin spider.

Can you imagine the bass you could catch with that thing on your hook! YEEE HAW!!

They are the freak relatives of those creepy bugs I get in my basement. I wonder if my cat could take one of these down like she does the cellar crickets.

I like the Drambuie ad below the article. I need a double shot of that after seeing such a creature. EEEEEWWWW.

Wouldn't need a hook...pretty sure that thing would kill and gut the bass for you.

That's not a big bug. That guy just has a really small carrot.

I've seen them up close in New Zealand. Not scary at all, though surprisingly large.

Also, I have beer mats from this place:

Not a bad place for a pint and a sandwich.

Conducts cage fights, generally to the death, of the entire invertebrate kingdom. It's farking genius.

It's hard to get up in arms about the suffering of invertebrates. Just the way it is. Human sympathy does not exist. Mammals, birds, yes. Fish, very little concern over fish suffering. Spiders, scorpions, mantis, centipedes, beetles, crawfish- none at all, really. In fact, quite the opposite, as it's fashionable to call for their death. Which is kind of funny because the complexity of their motion seems far greater than a mouse, for example.

It's fascinating to watch, though. I mean each of these creatures has an attack and defense strategy, and their configurations go all over the place. You really don't start with any idea what their capabilities are and how to predict the winner. I'd call it science, but it's questionable what value knowing the crushing strength of a Scarab beetle is against a scorpion exoskeleton is to anyone. I mean it's not likely to come up, or through extension yield much insight into a real-life situation. But it's still cool as hell.

I'm pretty sure lots of bugs can eat carrots, regardless of their sizes, so unless this one can eat a whole carrot....

Lord Summerisle: It is cute, glad I'm not strange for thinking so. Not like it's a frggin spider.

Yeah they really are. The normal, smaller version of the Weta is found all over New Zealand. I gew up near the bush and used to find them around the house, and even in my bedroom from time to time as a kid.

As one of our quirky native species, I've certainly some fondness reserved for them.

Praying Manti (that just doesn't look right for pluralization, but whatever) are awesome. Had a nest of them hatch in a ware house I worked in in NC. I'd always make it a point to pick them up and carry them out to safety if I happened to see any of them out in the open.
Had some idiot co-worker that thought that they could bite and kill you working there as well.
