"Based on the graphic novel"

It's a sci-fi novel, not a graphic novel. There are no pictures beyond the manga cover, assholes. I know they're quoting the Variety article, but for fark's sake...

As long as they sign on Dakota Fanning to scream and scream and scream for the entire movie, I'm sold.

2011-12-01 05:25:13 PM
You know I only watched it once, but it sure felt like a Groundhog Day type scenario was going on. Damn thing seemed to take 40 years to finish watching.

..so judging by the headline...it's a documentary on Scientology?

Ok now thats 2 new movies that he will be in?

Who the fark let Tommy out of the cage? I thought we were over this.

A Sci-Fi version of Groundhog Day? That would make a great SG-1 or Star Trek episode.

Ehhh you could always argue the merits on quality. I judge movies solely on whether or not they were able to successfully teach cave men the ability to fly super-sonic jets in a matter of days. Based on that, the movie is an A++

Oh, I see. Sorry. I guess I'm gonna get audited again.

I predict the new Mission Impossible will fail. I don't think people want to see Tom Cruise anymore.

Battlefield Earth was right up there with the most horrible films ever made. Keep in mind this scale not only takes into account how much it sucks, it involves budget which was huge, production values, first rate. Actors, all had good previous work. And it still was farking horrendous. That makes it worse than say an Ed Wood film, which has none of those advantages.

And I came to this conclusion having not known that Scientology Boy wrote it.

Or a flop movie called "Source Code" or "Next". Enough with the wash-rinse-repeat time travel stories already.

To be fair, we should probably cite the people that put it in a TV serial first (well, I think, it sounds like something Dr Who or Quantum Leap might have done even earlier).

I don't get the hate for "Source Code"; I liked it a lot, though it didn't need the second ending after the frozen kiss moment.

Not in Cruise's case. A total lack of perspective is the cornerstone of his personality.

why the hate?

he makes movies, some good, some bad.
he jumps on Oprah's couch.
afaik, he keeps his politics and personal views to himself.

"A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed"

Immediately reminded me of the Vatueil character in the latest Iain M. Banks Culture novel "Surface Detail".

Any Pie Left: I don't get the hate for "Source Code"; I liked it a lot, though it didn't need the second ending after the frozen kiss moment.

Right. The whole alternate reality thing was too much of a tacked on happy ending. But good movie apart from that.

I came to criticize Variety calling it a graphic novel, but instead, I'll just say this.

The quality of the story for me WAS the ages of the characters and what the Keiji has to learn. Frankly, a Westernized version of it would have done well with Daniel Radcliffe in the Keiji role as he's age-appropriate, he's got a small stature, and he could ride it into other adult oriented roles and leave the child actor behind.

Now it's going to suck.
