You always hear about this happening too, it's almost a dog bites man story at this point. Is tying it down with some bale string or clothes line too much work?

A lesser know corollary to the law:
"If you drop a piece of toast, it will land butter side down"

is this:
"If a mattress falls from a pickup truck, it will land stupid side down"

You should know, California is the retard belt. Or else you'd be like the rest of the country where you can ride in the back of a pickup truck without the state assuming you're dumb enough to jump out of a moving truck.

There are states where this is still legal? I thought seat-belt laws were in every state.

2011-12-01 06:00:20 PM
Actually if you read the seat belt laws, a great many states it is only for front seat driver/passengers. You can go without a belt in the back seat or the VERY back in this case.

The risk to a passenger in a cargo area is 10.4 times that of other occupants involved in collisions, according to HLDI. More than 30 states have outlawed the practice, and that number is likely to increase.

Headso: the phrase and activity "ghost ride the whip" came out of California, so don't pretend you're all high and mighty with your responsible use of a vehicles there.

Deaths in pickup cargo beds - 200/yr. Deaths as a result of "ghost riding" - highest number anyone claims is 8/all time.

Um, yeah, ghost riding is illegal in Cali, and has been for many years. That's why there have only been 8 deaths attributed to it. Riding in the cargo area of an open pickup truck is still legal and still highly dangerous in over 20 states, most of them south of the Mason-Dixon. There were more deaths in Texas (29) last year, 2010, due to "cargo-riding" in an open pickup than there have been in the entirety of ghost riding in California.

And the fact that more people die falling/jumping from a pickup truck in states other than California means... oh, that's right, physics class is something you don't want to know about.

20 states have no laws against riding in an open pickup bed. Despite crash/fatality statistics, it boggles the mind. Go on, guess which yahoo yeehaw god is my co-pilot states are happy to let you die or become a vegetable needlessly.

Of course, California IS the state where I saw a guy in a pickup driving down the road with at least six mattresses on top of the cab, stacked on top of each other, with nothing securing them at all except their weight. I didn't have a camera at the time alas, and I was too mesmerized anyway, watching them bounce gently up and down as the guy hit potholes and bumps, waiting for them all to fall off.

They didn't by the time I had to turn, but I still wonder if he made it home.

This happens everywhere. I see it far too often all around DC and NOVA and it's not just in pick-ups.

People have this attitude where "I have to transport these 16 sheets of plywood/couch/mattress and all I have is this 91 Toyota Tercel. I can make this work."

Scary stuff sometimes.
