Good on the NCAA. UCLA is in a unique position with USC ahead of them being banned from postseason play and ineligible for the CCG. If this were not the case, UCLA would have a 6-6 record going into the bowl season and be eligible for selection. It would be unfair to punish UCLA's team because Reggie Bush was a dumbass and accepted improper benefits more than seven years ago.

I reeeeeeally want to see UCLA win, and have a 7-6 team in a BCS bowl. I think the heads of no less than 3 ESPN commentators will explode at the thought.

Am I the only one who finds it bizarre that Neiheisel is coaching the Pac-12 title game AFTER getting fired? It would be hilarious if they won. Yeah, they have no chance, but it would be farking hilarious.

Also, since Neiheisel has failed at coaching again, I presume he will immediately be hired to coach another major program. How does that guy keep getting work?

Yea, I don't have a major issue with this. They don't belong in the CCG anyway.

Wrong. It's not Reggie Bush's fault the Bruins got crushed by an Arizona team that finished 4-8.

Why would they need a waiver? They're either invited to a bowl or not, right?

Who is Neiheisel?

Neuheisel, meh, you knew who I was talking about.

It's a natural outcome after years of all the players on neighborhood kiddie teams winning "participation trophies" and "tried-hard pins" and what have you.

happydude45: Why would they need a waiver? They're either invited to a bowl or not, right?

can't be invited with a losing record, which they will have if they lose to Oregon, which they will.

2011-12-01 12:49:43 PM
Because there are no other 6+ win teams in the country that could fill that bowl spot, right? Oh, but it has to be a good program that gets into the bowl game, because Money.

NCAA, why don't you just make a list of the ~70 teams you'd like to see in a bowl game every year, and just give them all automatic qualifications, regardless of records.

2011-12-01 12:49:45 PM
Not sure why UCLA would be eager for another opponent after they build on the 50-0 loss to USC with a 63-6 loss to Oregon.

happydude45: Why would they need a waiver? They're either invited to a bowl or not, right?

Need to have a winning or .500 record. This isn't even the first time the NCAA has granted a waiver. North Texas (?) got one a few years ago after winning their conference even though they went 5-6 overall (won their conference games, but lost to all the teams that brought them in for an easy win/paycheck).

I will be fine with UCLA going to a bowl if Penn State gets kicked out in their place.

I can't think of another "historic" program off the top of my head right now that seems so utterly content to just rest on its past laurels and exist as a bastion of mediocrity.

Yeah, they may be firing Neuheisel, but he's the biggest name they've hired for the football program in a while, and he's a tarnished one. And their basketball program has been apparently trending downward the past three + years.

As I once heard someone say about Neuheisel "What's he ever done but inherit good teams and cheat?" That seems to be good enough resume material to get steady FBS jobs.

puckrock2000: Ahem.

Notre Dame though definitely tries to be in the spotlight and regain past glory. Every new coaching carousel includes rumors of them pursuing (seemingly) every current NFL head coach, NCAA coach, and zombie coaches of yesteryear. With UCLA, you don't seem to hear sh*t, and then they end up hiring...Karl Dorrell.

2011-12-01 01:44:45 PM
If Aggies possessed even half the pride they claim to have in themselves, they would not show their 6-6 faces at a bowl game this year.

2011-12-01 01:53:21 PM
I can foresee a time when so many schools will be on probation for rule violations that bowls will be struggling to fill slots.

2-10 will be the new 9-3.

I have a feeling that UCLA is going to win, or at least play really well. Yesterday at practice the players carried Neuheisel off the field. If they do win, I'll definitely LOL.

Neuheisel needs to be fired. He was brought here to get UCLA over the hump. Instead, he brought us down into the depths of embarrassment. Hell, I bet that if people knew how bad UCLA football would become, they would have gladly kept Karl Dorrell around. At least his teams played with heart. When he was around I expected the team to win and was disappointed when we lost. With Neuheisal, I wonder how much we're going to lose by (50 this week? 60?) and is genuinely surprised when we win. I'll much rather have the former.

/Being a UCLA fan is depressing. . .

Ah boohoo. Try being a fan of a team that UCLA crushed in the NCAA finals when Wooten was there, has probably the worst football program in FBS, and has under performed last year and the start of this year in college basketball. Yup that's Memphis.
Thank god my dad started college at UGA so I have someone to root for during football season.

Well, I vividly remember Memphis handing it to us in the Final Four in '08. Of course, Mr. Rose made that moot. So I feel your pain.

That table the NCAA uses to pass money under must be freakin' huge.

Not only that but I think it was UCLA the prior 2 years that knocked us out in the elite 8.

No doubt. Delusions of grandeur. A friend of mine said as a UCLA fan I had to "manage my expectations".

Rather see UCLA get a waiver for going 6-7 due to an extra game than a 6-6 team get a waiver when one of their wins comes against a FCS team. (Now one of only 3 teams remaining to have not played against a FCS team)
