I don't miss the SA winds when I lived in Ca. I remember once flying back from visiting my dad after Christmas in Dc, and going from 20F and snow when I got on the plane to 83 at LAX at 9pm when I got off. My cold weather clothes were too much.

Though the next day a fire started near my high school up in Malibu, so we got a couple of days off. So that was cool.

Nice...getting a green with a Dan headline.

It was pretty harsh last night. Apparently gusting upwards of 80mph in the mountains, 50-60 everywhere else. I was watching palm trees swaying until they were almost horizontal.

I was right in the middle of it here. About 7:30pm the winds started blowing. Several trees were uprooted throughout the neighborhood, one is now a fifteen foot tall wall of leaves and branches crossing the width of the street.

www.majhost.com

My next door neighbor had a 10'x30' canopy over his driveway, each corner chained to cinder blocks. The wind lifted it like a kite and dropped it on my girlfriend's car, its legs thrust akimbo like a dead spider.

Then the power went out in the neighborhood. Without the artificial light the sky appeared blood red and green lightening flashed sporadically in the clouds around the peak of Mt. Wilson.

If this were a horror movie, by today there'd be zombies.

I really liked Cali. Except for those times when it was on fire, or shaking or sliding away in a mudslide, or blowing away in the Santa Ana winds, or burning while shaking and sliding away in mudslides with Santa Ana winds.

I remember trying to ride my bike in those winds.
Into the wind sucked serious ass, but with it at my back, I could easily pass up the cars on the road.

It's windy as hell here in Northern Utah - a good chunk of our freeway is a parking lot because the semis can't pass and they're just parked on the road. Didn't realize the Santa Ana winds reached this far.

Yeah, that isn't going to do much. You need to properly secure it into the ground. Pour some concrete footings a few feet deep, set the anchor bolts while it's still wet, and then secure it when it is all dry. Same system you'd use for securing a deck.

There is a good chance that your neighbor is going to get dinged because his canopy wasn't up to code...

I took a look at Merriam-Webster, here's their definition:
akim·bo adj or adv \ə-ˈkim-(ˌ)bō\
Definition of AKIMBO
1
: having the hand on the hip and the elbow turned outward
2
: set in a bent position

Since the legs and arms of the canopy were bent out and back in, much like a person's arm with the elbow out and the hand on the hip, or like a dead spider's legs looking like this:

isn't accurate enough? Meh, I'll just claim poetic license then and be happy I didn't call any of it "ironic" (don't ya think?)

As long as either he or his insurance company pays for the damage... I wonder if they'll deny the claim since it wasn't properly secured.

The power went out in my Valley neighborhood around 7pm last night. I sat in the dark for about an hour and a half before I decided to camp out at my mom's house (which has power--yay) 35 miles away.

These are not Santa Ana winds.

Santa Ana winds are off-shore and blow east-to-west in So. Cal. These were from the north.

2011-12-01 02:31:48 PM
I'm in East LA and we lost power around 2am last night. I just checked SCE's website and it's the usual "crews are working to restore power but there's no ETA". The lights started flickering around 10:30pm last night so I shut down most of my stuff and the rest are on different UPS power devices. This is still better than several months ago when the below ground power line blew up and we lost power for 3 days.

Odd, the Santa Anas always seem to come from the North or Northeast.

Here's the NOAA definition:
Santa Ana Wind
In southern California, a weather condition in which strong, hot, dust-bearing winds descend to the Pacific Coast around Los Angeles from inland desert regions.

I'm in Pasadena, and there are two trees down within a block of me. Both eucalyptus, so yeah, not exactly unexpected. The one that fell into the road is really confusing people because it's blocking three of four lanes last I looked. On the corner, one of the three heinously tall palm trees is now stripped of all its dead fronds, which are scattered all over the ground below, pretty much hiding the sidewalk. The other two look untouched, even though they look like the same kind of palm.

And a public transit truck just drove by with a bus route sign in the back of it, heh. Either way, all the local gardening/tree companies must be busy.

/More curious about what the long blue plastic thing that's tangled in a tree nearby is from.

Live in Pasadena here. My roof now consists of plywood and a little tar paper, the rest is on Colorado Blvd. :(

Santa Anas are a downslope wind that originates on the high desert and is adiabatically heated (and thus dried) during descent. These qualify as that, although the driving force is stronger than usual: an "inside slider" low over the Great Basin plus a really serious high (1047 mb!) over the Pac NW... this is pretty much a statewide event. It's been blowing in Nor Cal since yesterday morning.

/have to drive thru Pacheco Pass this evening with a carload of kids, not looking forward to it.

AMADOR COUNTY WHERE SPOTTER AT 6700 FEET REPORTING MANY LARGE
TREES BROKEN AT TOP AND MANY 18"-24" TREES UPROOTED OR SNAPPED.

From the National Weather Service today:

...Widespread Damaging Wind Event and Winter Storm for Western U.S...

Published: Thu, 01 Dec 2011 11:24:08 EST

A strong storm is bringing damaging winds and snow to the southwestern U.S. today. Strong and potentially damaging easterly winds are impacting the southwestern U.S. and are expected to continue through at least Friday. Wind gusts in excess of 140 mph have been recorded along the Sierra Crest. Santa Ana wind gusts as high as 80 mph are anticipated in southern California today, including higher-elevation areas near Los Angeles. This is forecast to be the strongest easterly wind event in the past several years. Dry conditions and high winds have also created a significant fire threat in southern California. Meanwhile, heavy snow is falling in the central and southern Rockies. This system will move into the Central Plains and Mississippi Valley over the weekend. For the latest local forecasts, watches, warnings and advisories for this event, see local NWS Weather Forecast Offices in the region.

A 140MPH wind just might snap off a few tree tops...

Im in Central California (about 4-5 hours away from SA). Winds are pretty heavy here too. Several roofs being stripped of their shingles. Trees down all over the place.

Anyone got a kite?

Another Pasadenan here. There's four full-grown trees down on my block alone, plus one that split in half onto one poor bastard's car. Pasadena has actually declared a state of emergency and closed the schools and libraries, plus the city buses aren't running. There's an unholy amount of debris in the streets and since the winds are still blowing they're worried more trees and power lines will come down. Last night I was hearing police and fire sirens nonstop for hours.

It's not by far the biggest natural disaster I've been through, but it's definitely not your normal everyday Santa Anas.

2011-12-01 04:14:43 PM
When we lived in Norco we had the neighbor's barn come flying across the street to land upside down on our fence. The Santa Ana winds were clocked at 100+ that night.

This is an event like that.

FWIW, the Sierra crest is well above tree line in most places.

That's because years ago the winds blew all the trees downhill.

It's been nasty in Vegas too since this thing blew in although I realize we're just getting the leftovers from CA. It tends to get very windy here whenever storms come in but last night, for the first time, I actually felt the strong gusts shake my house a bit. I'm very thankful right now that it's a typical southwest-style construction; those roof tiles aren't going anywhere!

Funny that just last weekend, I was hiking in a tee shirt and marveling at how gorgeous the weather has been.

Another Pasadenean here. Finally got my internet back at like 8pm. The whole neighborhood is a disaster area treewise but luckily I live on a major street and they cleared it pretty quickly. The old oak tree in front of my house that's been there for like 50 years is gone.

2011-12-02 12:14:03 AM
We live on Fort Irwin and the winds were the worst I had seen since moving here. Trees were uprooted, windows were shattered, and I had to chase our trash can down the street at 630 this morning. That being said, I think it's a hoot to see birds try to fly in these winds.
