It's gonna take a little longer than ten years for their rich tradition of ludicrous barbarity to fall away, Subby.

Halliburton would have seized her estate to give to the rapist, THEN imprisoned her.

If we only had some branch of study devoted to the accumulation of past knowledge, we could learn from the mistakes of others and avoid involving ourselves in stupid shiat like Afghanistan. We could call it "the big list of stuff that happened" or something.

Don't worry, once President Romney gets elected he'll join Israel in bombing Pakistan.

"At first my sentence was two years," she said. "When I appealed it became 12 years. I didn't do anything. Why should I be sentenced for so long?"

Here in America you get pulled over for DWB (driving while black). Over there you get 12 years for BFME (being female in the middle east).

It's amazing how advanced those regions were hundreds of years ago, at least until you realize they're still in that time period.

Lol and the attacker is her cousin's husband, so she's joining his harem. Nice.

So you're saying...we need to deport black people to Afghanistan?

And by studying the big list of stuff that happened we could avoid being doomed to do again the same stuff that happened.

Has there ever been a time when anyone's foreign policy had the ultimate goal of improving someone else's country? Ever?

If you don't like their country, don't buy any of their exports. Refuse to do business with anyone who does. Much easier said than done, however.

I know I'm just speaking out of frustration and that international politics are incredibly complicated and convoluted dealings, but it really sucks that we support nations that not only allow but fully embrace things like this as cultural norms.

Until the people of that region throw off the chains of religion as the dominant force in their culture, like we have mostly done in the west, stupid shiat like this will continue.

To be fair, that is an improvement over the Taliban, which would have just stoned her to death.

"Blah blah..prevent terror from ever taking root there again...blah blah...make sure Afghanistan is never again a haven for those who want to do us harm...blaaaaahhh..."

We all heard them all say it ad nauseum. You can't accomplish any of that without improving the place. Problem is, it was probably always a fool's errand. Afghanistan doesn't even want to be a country - it wants to be an area in which there are separate tribes and clans and factions.

Yeah, I understand your confusion. This could have been easily avoided if they had gone with the more descriptive name "Operation Turd Polish". The Bush PR team shot that down early in the planning stages.

ME complaints about being treated like children who can't manage their own country's affairs just lost a little weight.

Now, if subby's Mom would just lose some weight as well, I'd consider making an honest woman out of her as well.

Farking disgusting. Get out of the 9th century, you farking douchewads. That Karzai went along with it means he's just as bad as the rest. That's our guy in Afghanistan? Fark him. He's human garbage.

The European Union recently blocked the release of a documentary on Afghan women jailed for so-called "moral crimes".

The EU said it decided to withdraw the film - which it commissioned and paid for - because of "very real concerns for the safety of the women portrayed".

wtf? Then take steps in the film to protect their identities, but get the farking information out. It needs to be seen.

Half of Afghanistan's women prisoners are inmates for "zina" or moral crimes.

What a revolting society.

This isn't new.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29:

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

All the time countries try to improve others by moving in and teaching them how to speak a better language, better religion, etc.

Well, it's not like they're the same culture anymore.
Centuries of blood feuds have a way of stopping and reverting progress.
Because what works in a cooperative society is not a strategy for success in a land of constant conflict.

If anything, they're a warning that just because Earth is (overall) a much better place than it used to be, that is by no means guaranteed and under constant pressure from those who'd leverage "us vs them" tribal conflicts to increase their own power and treasure.

Isn't religion great? It clearly makes the world a much better, and moral place.

I'm grateful to the hard-working Christians in our society who seek to bring similar morals to our own country.

If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.
