According to data from analysis firm Canalys the next version of the iPad is likely to be the product to tip the balance in Apple's favor.

The iPad is a PC?

It's all IPads and Iphones. If you exclude these:

"In August 2011, Gartner estimated Apple's PC market share in US as 10.7% for Q2 2011. Apple's worldwide market share is not listed, because not in top 5; inferred to be 5% or below. Gartner's numbers include netbooks, but not media tablets such as the iPad." Link (new window)

It could be argued that tablets are PCs.

Abe Vigoda's Ghost: It could be argued that tablets are PCs.

Sure, it could be argued that anything that's personal, and is also a computer, is a PC. Doesn't mean doing so is useful.

i almost cant wait for the market share to increase, and then they will get raped by viruses. And everything will balance out.

tallguywithglasseson: The iPad is a PC?

P.C. Personal Computer. So yes an iPad would be the very definition of a PC, so would the iPhone and indeed any other slate (or full-fat tablet) or modern smartphone.

Now if you mean "IBM PC or 100% Compatible" (i.e. x86 processor) no, it isn't. Like the majority of embedded/mobile devices it uses ARM.

I would agree that it's retarded to factor slates/smartphones in to figuring out who's the largest shipping Desktop/Server OEM. That's Dell. Rack upon rack of Dell as far as the eye can see.

Never happen. Raped by viruses I mean. Like any *NIX derivative it'll be bad touched by rootkits long before it's bent over and abused by viruses.

So if the iPad is a PC for sales purposes but not for product comparison? I seem to remember a bunch of folks arguing that the hardware can't be compared becuase it wasn't a PC. So which is it?

I think tablets should be counted as PCs. They are basically netbooks without a hardware keyboard. Of course, then, is a Playstation 3 a PC? You can run Linux on it (well, you used to be able to). The line between what a PC is and what a "computerized thingy that isn't a PC" has always been blurry.

Top PC Maker.... OS share is different.

Think about this, 600 companies make Windows PC's and 1 company makes Mac OS PC's.

Though, Apple may be #1 in making machines, it still doesn't mean they sell more than the lumped together total of Windows PC makers.

Apple stinks...

No idea. I know my iPad 2 is a wonderful device and quite powerful in terms of MIPS, but I know my main machine utterly destroys it using the same metric.

I'd be happier throwing an x86 'full fat' tablet in to the ring against a desktop or get one of those ARM desktop prototypes and throw it in the ring against a slate as at least that way you're comparing the same architecture.

ARM v x86 really is apples to oranges, one is designed from the ground up for low power consumption low heat production. The other's designed for performance at the expense of power consumption and heat production.

Yes, generally, when you want stats like this to prove Apple's dominance, the fanboys will include the iPad in the list: "Hey, if you get to include netbooks, iPads count."

But when you start comparing features between iPads and netbooks: "Listen, you hater, iPads clearly aren't PCs, so why are you bothering to compare the two."

It's the best of both worlds!

Point taken. As an owner of an iPod Touch and iPad 2, my opinion is they are not a "Personal Computer". They have more in common with the Palm Pilot than a Macbook or iMac.

Hell if an iPad is considered a PC, why not an iPod Touch? Basically the same device, just with a bigger touch pad...and if we include the Touch, why not the iPhone since they are the same as the Touch or the Pad, with the addition of telephone hardware.

If one stands back and looks at this overall, as you stated, does it matter if Apple is "the number 1 PC manufacturer in the world" if less than 6% of the total world market share belongs to them?

2011-12-01 02:03:17 PM
If it's not shipping with Windows, Apple will not become the top computer manufacturer.

For better or worse:

a. More people use Windows than MacOS
b. More businesses use Windows than MacOS

Sorry to be a wet blanket here, but something needed to be said.

And for the record, I do have an iPad2...and for what it generally is (web browsing, email, games--such that they are), it's pretty nice.

But sooooo many limitations...I wouldn't call it a PC, in much the same way that I wouldn't call most random gizmos with an electronic brain a PC.

When I was a kid and Apple were using Motorolla 68k processors people said they had 5 - 6 percent of the market. When I was at college and Apple were using IBM PowerPC processors people said they had 5 - 6 percent of the market. Now, I'm an adult and Apple are using Intel x86 processors and people are saying they have 5 - 6 percent of the market.

Now either Apple's market share has remained static over the last twenty odd years (unlikely) or people are pulling figures out of their ass to suit their needs.

Apple's market share is around the 10 - 15 percent of the desktop market, a lot less in the server market (because Apple stopped making rack mount units) and a lot more than 15% of the mobile device market.

Which doesn't make them number 1 but is kinda impressive when you look at the number of offerings Apple has per segment vs say Dell or Lenovo.

After having exceeded the growth rate of the PC industry for five-and-a-half years (22 consecutive quarters), Apple's Mac platform now commands a 5.2 percent share of the worldwide PC market, according to an analysis by Needham & Co.

This is the first time in fifteen years that the Mac's share has exceeded 5 percent, as AppleInsider points out. Apple reported record Mac sales of 4.89 million units during the recently ended September quarter, which was a growth of 24.6 percent from the year-ago quarter and much higher than the PC industry's overall growth of 5.3 percent. Apple's Mac market share was at 4.4 percent at the end of the September quarter in 2010.
(new window)

Apple's market share is around the 10 - 15 percent of the desktop market.

As a continent, North America takes the cake at 14.09%, which isn't too surprising considering it is the home of Apple. Next up is Oceania (Australia & New Zealand) at 13.71%. Europe as a whole is at a somewhat low 6%, but looking at specific countries gives a very different picture; Switzerland tops off everywhere in the world with a 17.61% Mac market share, followed by Luxembourg with 15.79%, Iceland at 15.18%, Norway with 12.14%, and Denmark's 11.71%. As I said before, you could count Ti83 calculators or the iPod as market personal computers as well.
But we don't see TI anywhere on the consumer PC scale for students, nor were people calling Apple [specifically] the top PC seller when iPods were outselling everything in the tech market.

Who said it is irrelevant, really. Unless it was Steve Jobs, indicating that he reached some form of immortality.
