The part that got to me was finding out that surgery was done on her ears so they wouldn't stick out as much so to keep people from being reminded that she looked like Clark Gable.

Also, I liked Loretta Young - I thought she was a beautiful woman and a very good actress. It's distressing to find out how much she denied her daughter's right and need to know the truth about her father.

I often scorn the crazy lives a lot of celebrities lead nowadays. Then I read stories like this that happened fifty, sixty, seventy years ago and realize that a lot of celebrity lives back then were just as crazy - but the consequences were handled a lot differently.

I saw an awesome story on this lady. Apparently, there were rumors that Loretta Young was pregnant, but she had to say she wasn't. What does she do? She hops into bed, pulls a blanket over her bulging belly, and asks reporters to come see her in her room where she denied all accusations. Later, when the kid was born, the poor thing's ears stuck out like Gable's so the child was made to wear a hat until she could have surgery to pin her ears back.

In her later years Loretta Young lived in one of the swankier desert communities in the California low desert, Palm Desert or La Quinta or Indian Wells or something and was a well-loved and respected member of the community.

I digress. Anyway, when she passed she was memorialized in a local paper for her devout Catholicism and while I can imagine that for an older generation that was once a virtue I cannot help to feel sorry for her and her daughter to have had to live lives of such lies to fulfill society's expectations and I hope their souls all found eventual peace.

I used to live in Lake Arrowhead, California, and not only for awhile was it a retreat for celebrities, it was also where some of the best VIP asylums were located, and they were where Hollywood kept their unwanted children.

I think those places are still there.
