From the battlefields at Walmart to the Best Buy front-lines and the combat zones of Target.... Never in the field of human conflict has so much been charged by so many to benefit so few.

No, it merely means that your chances of getting your wish increases if you decide to die prematurely.

I got an offer for 3% cash back on a credit card for all purchases. Of *course* I'm using the card - I get 3% cash back, plus I get interest (admittedly not much) on the amount I would have had debited from my account before paying the credit card.

Net debt goes down, I've gotten $80 in interest over two months, and I was able to use this to build a larger "cushion" in case of an emergency.

"In response, most banks eliminated rewards programs for debit cards and sweetened rewards for credit cards, which weren't affected by the rule, says Bill Hardekopf, CEO of LowCards.com.

For example, Chase and Citibank are offering new card holders $200 cash back if they spend $500."

Do not do this. There are more requirements to get the $200 cash back that you hold the card with a balance, blah, blah, blah. Read all the details carefully.

Just remember where the money ultimately comes from with a "cash back" card. The card company is charging the retailer a larger fee and is giving a portion of that back to you, while pocketing the difference. The retailer, in turn, is marking up his/her prices to compensate.

In a society in which only a small percentage of customers are using cash-back cards, the cards are a clear win for those few customers. In a hypothetical society in which everyone was getting "cash back" on all of their purchases, the only winners would be the credit card companies.

Did all my Christmas shopping with my credit card. Will pay the balance off in two weeks, once all the charges clear. The money to pay it off is already in the bank, waiting for me to click a few buttons. I like the rewards I get for using the credit card, and it does help my credit score.

Indeed, "credit" is simply a score that tells banks that they should loan money to you because you will get yourself into debt to them and then pay that debt off. You will get a higher score if you drag the process out and pay your debt back slowly, thus paying them more in interest. In layman's terms, it is a measure for how much of a sucker you are.

/Learned this the hard way

I'm aghast at the thought of paying interest on anything and am making the best moves I can to pay off my car and mortgage ASAP. Credit cards, are you farking kidding me? I only charge what I can pay off, and I pay the balance in its entirety before it is due.

I don't think he's being silly. That is actually legitimate-bordering-on-poetic use of semicolon.

IKanHazaBukkit: Chase Sapphire, Is that you!?

It's Chase, but it's not Sapphire I think (unless they upgraded it w/o mailing out a new card). Same kind of deal though, yeah.

I know it's cool to hate on the big banks right now, but I'm really happy with Chase. They didn't jerk me around on my name change the way Citi did (I'd had that card for 8 years... closed it after getting the runaround three times), and they've generally been kinda awesome to deal with (including reversing a $1000 charge made 8 months prior when the person that I had prepaid for work closed down).
