Given the average height of men and women, American men have a BMI slightly greater than American women (about 28.5 vs. 27.5, both overweight). Men: Why don't they lose some weight?

Sweet! That makes me skinny, right?

Perhaps if you'd prepare healthier sandwiches we wouldn't be so fat.

The disconnect with "ideal" weight also seems to be widening. Actual ideal weights, defined by the Body Mass Index, have not changed significantly over the past 20 years

I don't think using BMI as the standard measure of ideal weight makes a lot of sense, especially for people at the extreme ranges for both height and weight. My BMI is just over 16 which is listed as "severely underweight". I think using the waist to height method makes more sense, especially for determining future health risks.

Average height for women in the U.S. is 5'4". Here are some women who posted shots of themselves at that height/weight (various weight loss forums).

Great. After all this time trying my best at everything, there's something I'm below-average in. Guess I'm gonna have to try harder. It's the American way!

So I am more than 20 pounds below average, and at 5 9, I think my height is right at average. And I disgust myself when I look in the mirror.

Maybe I just need tone. Or I am body dismorphic. One of those.

I've tried, but the court said that I couldn't come within 30 feet of hacksaws ever again.

Well, yeah, but you're a gay dude. If you aren't toned they throw you out of the club.

Maybe you've just been spending too much time looking at people on the cover of magazines at the check out line. Unless you have that Kuato guy coming out of your chest there's no reason to be disgusted with yourself when you're 20 pounds underweight.

Been hovering around 195 for about a decade now...

I weighed in at 240 when I moved back to the States in '99.

Had to completely change my diet and routine to do it, but it was definitely worth it. Hypertension, High Cholesterol and Heart Disease run in the family and my mother dropping dead at 54 pretty much scared me into a healthier lifestyle.

Once it becomes routine, it's fairly easy to maintain, and I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything.

Not true. I still have my membership.

Yeah. Maybe I need to quit watching True Blood.

However, I don't think I am necessarily underweight. I am probably right about average in terms of what your weight is supposed to be. It's just that Americans on average are getting so far beyond their healthy weight. I guess it depends on your criteria.

I mean, I try to imagine what I would be like with 20 extra pounds. I'd be pretty damned fat.

I'm 5'11 and 190 and I need to lose about 20 lbs.

Also I know what Diogenes means. Its tough to be an overweight 38 year old gay man. You end up having sex with other 38 year old overweight gay men. You rarely get to be with a guy who is much hotter than you.

Without fail, every single one of my gay friends says he needs to lose 10 or 20 pounds. What's the deal? Was there some sort of convention that decided that in order to be gay you have to fit into skinny jeans?

We have friends who have a garage sale every year in their community. They're both clothes horses, so they always have lots of nice clothes to sell. They say the clothes sell worse every year. The wife (small, petite thing) says just looking at the people says it all. People are getting too fat to fit in them.

Yeah, but that isn't a nice sight to see. Women going for women is nice because that's one beautiful creature playing with another one, and everyone enjoys that. Dudes are ugly. Ugly + ugly = ok, that's nice, I'm happy for you but go do that over there.

So that means I am well above average... I'm finally good at something! YAY ME!

2011-12-01 11:13:04 AM
Meanwhile. I'm trying and failing miserably to put on some weight. All these cork suckers constantly telling me that I'm "way too skinny and need to eat more" everytime I dare to wear a regular form-fitting shirt have given me some severe body dysmorphia. And a huge heap of annoyance at being called a liar when I insist that I've already tried plenty of different foods and nutrition plans to aid me in this venture. I shake my head at how it's apparently fine to issue cruel and judgmental comments about someone's weight when they're "too skinny" whether they be a family member or casual friend or complete stranger, but these same people hardly utter a word towards the morbidly obese (or they're at least kind enough to say it to the obese behind closed doors rather than loudly proclaiming their judgments in public).

wyltoknow: Meanwhile. I'm trying and failing miserably to put on some weight...

I'm in the same boat. I've just gotten used to people asking me if I'm anorexic or assuming that I purge after every meal. They would never dare ask someone who was obese if they had an eating disorder or how many meals they had per day. Some female 'friends' become downright nasty if they see me eating cake or ice cream or having a second helping because I don't have to watch my diet like they do. I'm not saying being underweight is some kind of horrible burden, but it's certainly considered far more acceptable to be rude about it.

As for gaining weight, try boost between meals.

Same here. Of course, lately I haven't been going to the gym as often as normal, and I'm still eating like a horse. Haven't gained much weight since summer (maybe 5 lbs), but I still look slovenly. :-/
