EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State cheerleader Taylor Young was in stable condition at a local hospital after falling on her face during a performance.

The 20-year-old junior from Twin Lake, Mich., was raised into the air and fell hard onto the court during a timeout Wednesday night when the Spartans hosted Florida State

Dr. Jeff Kovan, the basketball team's physician, was among the medical personnel who evaluated the cheerleader. She was slowly strapped to a backboard and her head was immobilized.

The cheerleader smiled and stuck both thumbs up when the crowd cheered after she was lifted onto a stretcher.

"She's OK," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said.

All that said, (as of a few years ago when I last looked into this) cheerleading as it is today is a very dangerous activity that various forces refuse to label a sport, and because of that cheerleaders do not get the oversight, equipment, medical resources, and even standby ambulance that actual sports get. And there seem to be reasonable claims this is actually a bad outgrowth of Title IX.
