I bought one of these this weekend:

i40.tinypic.com

The gadgets are pretty cool. Once you figure out your blind spots, you're all set. Not bad for a car under $20k. I tried the Fiesta but it felt like I was driving a golf cart. I did try, yet again, to buy American and went Asian... again.

So you will be buying a silicone car protector to go over it?

Which way is the front?

If I could spend 10% on something which kept my car from getting dented or failing, I sure as hell would.

Hey, I'm Mr. J Smith too! :-p

The idea that you could "unlock" games and other distractions if you pull into the auto-pilot lane seems like a really cool idea. The simulated racing game seems especially fun.

Being able to change colors on the fly seems like it might be problematic for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that cars in the non-auto-pilot lanes might not see a car that has an odd patterning scheme.

Cool idea, but Toyota doesn't seem like the kind of company that can produce truly new and innovative cars.

The absolute last thing I need the ability to do is display messages containing what's on my mind to the outside world.

/ also, I see lots of pronmobiles in the future...

We're one step closer to having a Knight Rider car. I'll take that over a flying car any day.

Yeah, I'm sure that won't prove a distraction to drivers and be a contributing factor to increased traffic accidents at all.

If this is what the future looks like, I'm going to need to significantly increase my budget for acid.

A virtual racing app for your car and a hot blonde hostess telling you where to go at all times will surely lead to more responsible, less distracted driving.

I didn't see an orange Charger anywhere in that article. Toyotas gay and its shiats all retarted.

i remember the good old days when radio, ac, power windows, rear window heater, and variable wipers were extras. my 71 4 speed vw superbug came that way. it took some doing but i found a 5 speed 86 nissan truck on the dealer lot with only a cigarette lighter. i may be the only person who uses their car as their quiet and thinking place.

American assembled, not really sure if I'd call that American made, virtually all the profits go back to South Korea, and most of the back-office and logistics type work is in south Korea. On the whole, you'll put more food on more tables of more Americans by buying a Mexican assembled Ford, much less an American made domestic.

Also South Korea, a country that displays their gratitude for protecting their asses for the last 60 years seems in the form of a a grossly unfair trade policy, no thanks....

Not sure how a Mexican assembled Ford benefits the American worker, considering it's assembled with parts also made in Mexico.
As far as where the profits ultimately end up; Hyundai is a publicly traded company. I'm sure there are plenty of American investors.

If you're really concerned about grossly unfair trade policies, you might want to avoid buying anything made in China. Good luck with that.

Tell me about it. When my wife was pregnant with my daughter, we bought an SUV because life is too difficult already to deal with putting a kid in and out of the backseat of a Mazda Protege. We test drove a used '05 Ford Escape and a used '05 Hyundai Tucson. The Tucson simply blew it away in every aspect... and it was cheaper.

/In an unrelated note, the sales guy at the Ford dealership was pushy and annoying, the sales guy at Hyundai was pretty relaxed and was interested in working with us to make the sale

So I'm casually looking at a new car and these are the basic requirements:

6-cylinder engine
RWD
manual transmission (not flappy-paddle autobox)
sedan

As best i can tell the only options are an Infiniti G37 Sport6MT (w/ options about $45k) or BMW 335i (w/ options almost $60k). Does anyone else think this is completely ridiculous?

/could look at a 328, but I'd much prefer the turbo'd 335

VW TDI
2.0L, 140 hp, TDI® Clean Diesel engine, 6-speed manual transmission 30/42 mpg From $26,395

Don't be put off by the 140 hp. The diesel engine will have a lot of torque. Keep in mind the jetta is the exact same care with a slightly different body.

Weekends at the track are significantly more fun with a RWD imo. I've got a buddy who swears by his FWD Mazdaspeed 3, but i'd rather be closer to the 50/50 weight distribution and get rid of torque steer issues. Preference more than anything else.

They do

Maybach 62S has tray tables in teh rear, along with fully-reclining rear seats. It will only set you back about a $500,000.(new window)

Why a sedan instead of a coupe?

A relatively late model (now discontinued) GTO can probably be picked up on the used market for much cheaper than either the Infiniti or the BMW.

Coupes are appealing to me for a lot of reasons, but sedans are appealing to my wife for a particular reason: carseats. We don't have any kids yet, but the chances of me having my next car when we do is near 100%. If other coupes were in the mix I'd be looking strongly at a a 1-series, Nissan 350/370, etc..

zounds. I don't really care that much about cars, but I would not throw that car out if someone gave it to me (and somehow forced me not to resell it for the cash).

/ so, I have to spend 100x the current value of my car for tray tables. I mean, I'm not asking for flying cars here.

Serious suggestion. Get the coupe. A 370Z would be very nice. :)

Then a few months before your wife is ready to pop your first child out, buy a Honda Fit. It is small, so it is easy to park. It is tall, so it is easy to see the road. The inside feels much bigger than the outside lets on, we carried 4 adults and a child in a carseat without any problems, plus we had a couple large suitcases in the back.

Yes, a Fit isn't going to be a V6 sports sedan, but it is very sensible and easy to drive and easy on the gas. Plus, it is much easier to access the back seat to strap in the kids. We had an Impreza for 4 years and the difference between that and the Fit is like night and day.

I don't work for Honda. I'm just a satisfied customer.

Mythbusters appeared to have good luck covering an entire car with that spray-on truck bedliner stuff. It wasn't totally impervious, but it was pretty good at resisting dents and dings.

Your car will look like neon oatmeal, though.
