Is he going to share it with the team of animators?

Either he or the animators deserve one.

It was the best performance I've seen this year. I haven't seen many movies this year, but it was the best that I've seen. Damn convincing monkey.

"He BECAME Caesar the ape. It was incredible to watch. He refused to break character for the entire shoot. I saw him hurl his own feces at a PA who messed up his Starbucks order once. What an incredible artist."

Pure gold.

As boring a movie as S1m0ne was, it will probably wind up being prophetic in that we'll wind up seeing "synthetic" actors being given top honors.

I don't think people will ever not like seeing actual people in their movies. It's just my opinion, of course, but I put a lot of stock in the uncanny valley hypothesis. (new window) Especially with the widespread availability of HD TVs in the home, these minor incongruities can tend to stand out very starkly. Sure, it works for throw-away or fantastical action/adventure FX movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but I doubt we will be seeing these sorts of effects or techniques arising in movies which rely on human drama and empathy primarily.

I thought the same thing about sets, stunts, special effects, et al when CGI first started to get a strong foothold.

Most people will like what they are told to like.

Most people are tasteless boobs who wouldn't get the Ow My Balls! joke if you explained it to them twice.

Ow! That was my feelings!: anybody seen it? worth netflixing?

Yes it is, in all seriousness I thought Franco was going to bring the movie down, but all in all the movie was really solid.

And surprisingly enough you can somewhat connect with Serkis' portrayal of Caesar.

I couldn't get over the idea of people losing to apes. The gorilla jumping into the helicopter just didn't make sense. Why would you keep your helicopter within gorilla jumping distance?! Didn't they teach you anything in pilot's school?

Then I heard what actually happens and it piqued my interest a lot more. Personally the trailers don't do it justice.

It's okay. The Oscars apologized by expanding it to 10 nominees the following year so wonderful movies like The Blind Side (are you farking kidding me??? The Blind Side?) could get nominated for Best Picture.

That was the opinion I had before watching it. Then I did see it (just last night) and I was so blown away by Caesar. I'm not surprised to learn that he was mo-capped.

If you want an Oscar, you should actually appear onscreen. It's a mistake to start nominating special effects for acting awards.

Serkis deserved a nomination for the 2nd and 3rd Lord Of The Rings movies. He might have had the best performance of anyone in the cast.

FFS, they gave Judi Dench a statue for a movie she was only in for five minutes.

He does appear on screen. But instead of wearing elaborate makeup - he is 'wearing' CGI. How is that hard to understand?

Andy Serkis was also Gollum. You might not know the work that he did for either role, which is essentially wearing a green suit and acting like a goddamned knuckledragger while doing all of the movements, voicework, etc.

It's alright. About as deep and complicated as a Justin Bieber song, but fun enough. They really go out of their way (to an absurd extent IMO) to make people so bad and evil no-good to ensure that you sympathize with the apes.

Thirty years from now, Serkis will be spoken of in the same regards as the major innovators of stop-motion, F/X, animation, and makeup.
Bank it.

I know I couldn't do what he does, and from what I understand he is the gold standard for motion capture.

Rev. Skarekroe: Is he going to share it with the team of animators?

Did they animate anything, or was the CGI ape a digital costume or puppet, with every point of articulation directly connected to a point on Serkis' body? Were Serkis' eye movements captured and directly transposed to the face of the ape? If not, then the animators helped perform the character. Of course the same could be said of stunt doubles, body doubles, hand doubles, dummies, models, and CGI that substitute for the credited actor at various moments throughout most films ever. Yoda was "performed" by Frank Oz but even as a puppet there were multiple puppeteers making that thing work.

Andy Serkis did actually appear in LOTR: Return of the King as Smeagol. It's the first scene of the film and where we see his transformation to Gollum.
