A common refrain I've heard is that without Joel and the Bots, the movie is "unwatchable", but I suspect a big part of that is the bad visual presentation that the movie has always had.

Nnnno it's not.

At the end of the day, a lovingly-shot, warmly-lit, crystal-clear, brilliantly-composed high-quality artisan film photograph of a steaming pile of Doberman dung is still just a really sharp picture of dog$#!+.

Ah good, I've always been disappointed in the quality of the full-contact nightgown wrestling scene.

Well, outside of the visual presentation, the horrible acting, the bad direction, the pacing, the mostly incoherent plot and bizarre ending, it's an OK film.

I don't think that's such a great idea.
Unless every frame of the film looks like someone's last known photo, I don't think it'll have quite the charm.

The Master... approves?!

"Manos: The Hands of Fate" and "flawless" do not belong in the same world.

Almost as good as Eegah!

Manos: Hands of Fate is the single most overrated MST3K episode.

There, I said it. I feel better now.

People rag on this film and deservedly so but the guy had no experience, no real actors and no budget. What's Michael Bay's excuse?

Who would want a restored copy? It's the low-rent nature of the movie that makes it legendary.

HE TRIED TO KILL ME WITH A FORKLIFT!....Now in stunning digital detail!

I would watch it.

Flawless workprint? I can think of one flaw...

Everyone?

Gotta add the fingerquotes to that.

Not at all familiar with the film, the idea that someone has found something lost and is restoring it is genuinely pretty cool and I wish them luck!

2011-11-30 05:19:20 PM
I'm an old time horror movie fan. I've seen about everything and I've got something of my own coming out.

I just cannot watch Manos.

Don't forget the haunting Torgo Theme.

INeedAName: Not at all familiar with the film, the idea that someone has found something lost and is restoring it is genuinely pretty cool and I wish them luck!

Become familiar with it and report back with your new opinion.

This film is stinko. I mean it is awful. Without MST3K there is no reason to ever subject your retinas to it.

2011-11-30 05:24:21 PM
Just today at work we had two switch ports for a backup master server. I suggested that we name one port 'The Master' and the other 'Torgo'.

\A counter-suggestion was 'The Master' and 'The Doctor'
\\We went with 'Master1' and 'Master2'... :(

db2: So when do we get Zardoz on Bluray?

I don't think I'm ready to experience Sean Connery's majestic yambag in 1080p HD.

Actually, I'm pretty sure NOBODY really is.

2011-11-30 05:28:22 PM
Well, with the supposed sequel in the works* (new window), it's not surprising that we might be getting a Special Edition of the original.

* - no news I could find in over a year, it may be dead in the water.

2011-11-30 05:28:43 PM
There was an interview a while back with the dude from MST3K and he said he didn't know until recently that Torgo had hooves for feet because everything was cut off by their shadows.

I just think it's hilarious they missed out on a detail of the movie that made it worse

2011-11-30 05:31:25 PM
And this, right here, is why I stopped lurking after two years.

(I'm the guy who said Hurricane Irene wouldn't flood New England very badly. Hello. Also, I can't believe BKITU isn't here yet.)

I'll buy it when it hits Blu-Ray. I'm a big film restoration nut and the movie--despite being shiat--deserves to be reappraised without the technical glitches. Well, the ones that made it onto the film stock.

Be interesting to see how it turns out when we see it clearly. It's not a good movie by any stretch, but it could be more interesting when everything is clear and the movie has to stand on it's story. What remains of it, that is.

I have a pristine 35mm timing print of "The Check Is in the Mail (1986)" with two different endings.

Probably should leave it in the cellar...

Hopefully once they've worked out the details on the propulsion system to be used for ejecting DVDs from a giant, floating stone head making various stops at optimal market locations.

sigdiamond2000: Manos: Hands of Fate is the single most overrated MST3K episode.

Maybe, but it was still one of the best. All the best MST3K episodes had movies that were at least visually interesting to watch. There were some movies they did that were so boring, that even Joel, Mike and the bots couldn't save them.

2011-11-30 05:53:06 PM
Film restoration is a noble art. "Manos" is a crappy film no matter how scintillating the picture quality is. Nonetheless i salute this guy's efforts.

A pristine copy of Manos! Who says there is no God???? And one (assuming you are not Hindu, etc.) with that wacky sense of humor that helps soft pedal that whole misunderstood "flood" thing.

You da man, YHWH!

If the only way you can watch this movie is that you've overdosed on one or more of your drugs of choice, then why bother?

It's like finding Satan, wounded and dying, by the side of a deserted road.

You can't just leave him there. He's too interesting not to save.

But at the same time... It's Satan.

Can a restored print of "Manos" legally be produced and distributed, though? The film was released 'only' 45 years ago, and it's my understanding of present US Copyright Law that a work published in 1966 will not enter the public domain until 2061.

Reading the wiki on Manos it appears that the character was meant to be a satyr and they even made rigging with coat hangers and foam for his legs. However the actor put the rigging on backwards and no one mentioned it and so it just came out that he had really big knees. Hilarious.

I counter that with Birdemic! Shock And terror!

Much more boring than Manos, and Mike and the Bots totally made it watchable with the Rifftrax.
