Stories like this show why only well trained (Lee Paige for example) and rational (Daniel Harless for instance) LEOs should be armed on our city streets. Semi-automatic assault weapons, especially with shoulder-things that go up, belong on foreign battlefields not on our streets.

In the next shaky few minutes, they both calm down and concoct a story for the inevitable "shots fires" response from the PD.

I get that you're trying to be sarcastic, but you're actually making a valid point.

I'll agree that material possessions generally aren't worth more than a human life. But my material possessions are worth more than the lives of people who would try to steal my possessions.

And looking at this case specifically, I don't think TFA specifically said if the muggers had a weapon or not, but they were obviously threatening some kind of violence in order to take the couple's money. So fark them. If someone commits a violent crime or uses the threat of violence to commit an otherwise non-violent crime, then they've basically announced to the universe that they're willing to accept whatever horrible thing happens as a result. They don't necessarily deserve to die, but they don't necessarily deserve not to die either.

Again, fark them. Not committing crimes is a 100 percent effective way of not getting killed by your intended victims.

It just says "soldier", not rank, unit, or specialty. Quite possibly he's a grunt of some kind and doesn't actually have to qualify with a pistol beyond the CCP requirements. Hitting a moving target near center of mass that's dropped back to 7+ yards in the twilight/dark is competition shooter territory, not something you'd expect out of your average rifleman.

Defensive use of a pistol, while potentially lethal (and you should always aim for CoM) is de facto usually more in the realm of suppressive fire. You try to kill your target because that's what makes the threat effective, but the goal is to get them to stop committing whatever crime, so if you miss and they bolt, mission accomplished.

I like to play this little game with people. A masked guy walks up to you on the street with a knife and demands all your money. Then me and my lady left the scene, and we went and saw that new Muppet movie, which wasn't half bad, I have to say.
