No matter how many reports like this come out, you will always see people going "this generation is so lazy! Things were much more productive when I was their age. That is the reason our economy is going to trash."

More likely, small businesses are saddling the actually productive workers with the responsibilities of the lazy ones who sit around and browse Fark all day.

Wait, crap.

The trend over the past couple of decades bears this out. American workers are working harder and smarter but receiving less. Which begs the question, "where did all the wealth workers created go?" But to ask this question is to brand yourself a communist nowadays.

So thanks for reducing my costs while increasing the productivity of my ad hominems.

Those people are either in control of the bullwhips, or are the peons that put that 40 years of gains into crap they threw into their garages and landfills, instead of into investments and savings. And now their stealing from the next generation.

Thanks a lot boomers....

Most young people are expecting a lot, but thats because they've been playing by the rules laid down for them. They were told they need to spend thousands on education to get a good job, a job that typically has a boomer sitting in it who can't retire because he has no savings, and who's qualifications were a HS degree.

The typical college graduate will jump through 15-20 different places of employment now a days, because there's no way to move up vertically in todays boomer saturated workforce.

Bwhhahahahahaha!

Typical Gen-Xer figured that out years ago, that is why we are here on Fark. It is also why I occasionally try to taunt my boss into firing me. I know there are no promotions until the dam Boomers die in their offices and I'm too lazy to execute a job search unless there is a pressing need. Sadly if you are a competent worker with hard to replace skills they refuse to fire you.

Oh you can get fired. You just have to work at it. And once the boomers die, you'll get the position but not the pay, 'cause, even though the boomer who died in that office didn't really do half of his job the past 10 years, you'll have to "work up" to his salary.

80/20 rule

Was amazes me more is the boomers in HR departments that have build a mine field of "qualifications" to ensure they have a job.

We're talking mundane office work that just about anyone with a HS diploma or even a GED is qualified to do. If you ask the boomers still working those jobs, they're all HS graduates, or trade school graduates without college educations. HR is demanding a bachelor degree with 4 years work experience, or a masters! Oh, and they'll pay you 30K a year even though they're headquarter in one of the top 25 most expensive areas of the country.

tl;dr our country, or at least the middle class "America", is fraked.

Labor costs are falling because employers have learned that its really easy to negotiate pay freezes, benefit cuts and furlough days when everyone is terrified of losing their jobs - expect the trend to continue until either Europe or the US manages to pull out of recession and establish at least a couple years of solid growth leading to at least a modest amount of competition for employees again.

I honestly believe if it wasnt for at least some public sector jobs for comparison most private companies would have negotiated a complete end to any benefit except an hourly rate and a place to park your car.

Honestly, can't you retarded liberals learn even the basics of economics.

Ways to improve productivity: better process, quality control, robotics, equipment, technology, etc.

What improved productivity does: lower costs, lower cost of goods sold, decrease cost of entry, increase supply, etc.

To believe worker wage and worker pay should be linearly correlated is retarded. There are effects on both sides of that retarded idea other than people are working harder for less.

Totally. Because all human creations like economics are sacrosanct, with rules etched in stone that are impossible to change and manipulate.

That's because of all the people they fired. Now fewer people are doing the work of the ones cut.

Where are these 30k jobs you speak of? Last year I was hired as an editor for a small publishing company for a salary of 24k. They fired me because I wouldn't work more than 40 hours.

I'm currently working as a machine operator doing mail insertion. I'm a perma-temp and earn no PTO. My machine does the work of what 12 people used to do by hand.

People get to park for free at their jobs? What the fark. Best I can manage here is to get the rate reduced to 5 or 6 dollars/day.

I doubt anyone is calling for a 1 to 1 relationship between increases in productivity and increases worker pay. People are calling for worker pay (in real dollars) to increase a reasonable amount as productivity rises instead of stagnating like they have the past 30 or so years.

Wait, you don't have to pay for parking? Faaark, I feel ripped off now. If I knew cushy benefits like that could be negotiated in this day and age...

That's what I've noticed, and I've been looking for a job for months. Or they want some ridiculous combination of skills that you can't have unless you are coming from that exact job somewhere else. It's like they're trying to intimidate everyone into not applying before you even get done reading the ad.

And don't even think about farking benefits. Meanwhile, the part-time job I have now is overrun with retired teachers who are collecting retirement, and still working in the schools.

HR is demanding a bachelor degree with 4 years work experience, or a masters!

It's usually the hiring manager who sets requirements. HR are just glorified temps. Their job is to sort through resumes and present the hiring manager with the candidates who match his/her requirements.

My point is that HR is not your enemy (not that they're your friends either), they're just another cog in the machine.

Though for kicks and giggles I checked up on an employer I quit two years ago. I see that not only is my old position available again but, surreally, I don't have the requisite experience to apply to it.

They don't pay very well and demand regular unpaid overtime to boot. This might be worth bookmarking, muahaha.

But die they will, one day. When they're 90 and I'm 50, they'll start dying, and I may finally get that promotion from entry-level cog.

SnakeLee: No matter how many reports like this come out, you will always see people going "this generation is so lazy! Things were much more productive when I was their age. That is the reason our economy is going to trash."

People aren't more productive because they're working harder. They're more productive because engineers, scientists, software programmers, etc. have devised newer, better, faster ways to make things. What used to take 100 people now takes a robot and a few people standing around making sure the robot is running properly. To compare what I do today to what a comparable person would have done even just a few decades ago is silly. The amount of effort I put forth is trivial by comparison, but my productivity is higher because of improved tools.

For a few hundred bucks you can take a safety course and with no training other than "follow the safety rules because this is a dangerous farking place" you can easily get a job on an oil rig that pays $100k+. In your off time take some courses at your local community college and get certified to have the real life equivalent to Homer Simpson's job at a nuclear power plant. Nice clean (relatively) safe environment, $100k+ salary, great benefits, etc.

Happy to help, I assume all of your financial problems are solved.

There are no workers from this generation in my department. That's why we're so productive. We had a 25-year-old guy, but he thought he could get by doing half his job and talking on the phone all day. Bye-bye!

And don't cry to me about boomers having all the jobs. I'm a tail-end boomer. When I went looking for a job, they were all taken by people only five years older than me. No use waiting for somebody to retire. I had to get a crappy job and work my way up, instead of squatting in my mom's basement whining.
