Bio of a Space Tyrant would be difficult to do reasonably well as a TV show. A miniseries, maybe. Not a TV show.

Codex Alera would make for good television, but it'd be a tough sell. I love The Dresden Files, and I love Fantasy novels (I even stuck with The Wheel of Time, which I've been reading since Book 6 was released), but even I almost passed on the second book. The first - Furies of Calderon - was relatively slow, pretty much blindingly obvious (no surprises as I was reading it), and filled with cliches. Unfortunately, it's also pretty much required for understanding the characters, so they can't just skip to Academ's Fury (the second book).

/I will say I did get one significant thing wrong in the long run: I thought the scarred guy was the Princeps.

we're still not done with zombies in this pop culture cycle?

ok, i'll continue to wait...

"Any novel series that features zombie saber-toothed tigers should automatically be made into a TV show. That should be a law"

No, that should not be a law actually. I'm sick and tired of the whole zombie schtick, and its' cashing in by the MSM. Knock it the f*ck off already.

Because if there is one thing we haven't seen much of lately, by god, it's zombies.

I just finished that story. And I gotta hand it to Butcher...he plants good long-term story concepts nice and early in his series, doesn't he? That said, I'm looking forward to the pay off of the Dresden Files.

We want HARRY DRESDEN! Come on who does not want to see Sue rampaging through Chicago? Break the books down into two or three episodes each. With some Side Jobs and other tales thrown in for good measure.

I recently reread Weiss and Hickman's Death Gate Cycle and while the writing wasn't what I thought it was as a teenager, the world is fascinating and would make for a great mini-series. Actually, same thing goes for David Edding's ... one with the kid and the sword with the pearl in it? They turn into wolves?

Also, Dave Duncan's Seventh Sword series. Or West of January.

And I'd kill for a good Discworld adaptation.

Call me a cat lover, but "Bite Me" would be a much better Moore book to adapt for television.

While we're at it, why the hell would they pick one of his vamp books when the market is so saturated with the subject?

Give me Stupidest Angel or Lamb. Now.

Any novel that features zombie sabre toothed tigers should have a label slapped on it by the FDA reading "derivative trash". That should be a law.

I liked the books but the show really didn't do much for me since they changed things around to try for a broader appeal and also ran the series episodes out of order.

Bob was well done and I liked that they made his staff a hockey stick. Otherwise it was meh.

I'm more ticked about this than the wider appeal thing.

Yeah, but they farked it up royally by only paying sideways attention to the source material. They made Murphy a fairly tall Hispanic lady, Morgan somehow morphed from a late-middle aged white guy with serious anger issues towards Harry to a black man in his early 30s whose attitude towards Harry was more coldly professional, and they attempted to make Harry "blend in" by replacing his staff and blasting rod with a hockey stick and drumsticks. They brought in some of the plot from the books, but in a way that was utterly nonsensical and didn't leave dangling plot threads so much as tearing the plot apart and expecting us to coo over the mangled remains.

The only change I was able to get behind whole-heartedly was allowing Bob to manifest. Terrance Mann stole that whole damn show.

Since nothing is obscure on Fark, I'd suggest adapting the Coramonde books into a miniseries. You could make a short miniseries out of the first one, then use the second as a stepping-off point for a regular series. You could take a lot of liberties and still remain faithful to the premise of the story. Updating the military crew from Vietnam-era to a squad from Iraq or Afghanistan would easily work. I'd love to see a Bradley team go up against a dragon.

The Lost Fleet series (new window) by Jack Campbell. A fast paced six book cycle that it finished. No worries if the author is going to finish the series or not.

I'm looking at you Martin.

Also I would love to see a lot of fully rendered space battles week to week.

Par for the course for SyFy's The Asylumproduction team. I presume that Lance Henrickson,Jeffery Combs and/or Costas Mandylor starred in this?

I hope they never try another one again. Seriously, they replaced his staff and blasting rod with a hockey stick and a drumstick? WTF! Only thing I liked was Terrence Mann as Bob, that was awesome. "Ghost Story" was slow and boring, but I hope Butcher is back in form for "Cold Days". Dresden Files is my favorite book series ever, so I'll cut him some slack on a less than stellar book.

I agree that Zombies are pretty played out, but I would love to see a TV show based on the "Ex" books by Peter Clines (only 2 released, but a third is on the way). A creative and refreshing mashup of Zombies and Superheroes. Both books are really well written.

I'm with you, but science fiction has a severe cost problem right now - the stuff people want to see is expensive to produce, and the audience wanting to see it downloads it (negating ratings and ad revenue). If you don't hit the magic button on a premium channel, you've got to hit the Nielsen complex big time, and that's early impossible with weekly scifi and the average audience.

BigMamaBlueberry: "Ghost Story" was slow and boring,

SPOILERS:

Only after the balls to the walls action of Changes. As a character piece, Ghost Story was pretty stellar. He set up, rather well, I think, the up-coming character arcs, set the stage for some pretty dramatic tension (Harry/Murph, Harry/Molly, Harry/Thomas, what happened to Bob, to name a few.) I've a feeling the He Who Walks Behind stuff is going to end up being inCREDibly important. Not only that, but there's an implication that Lash (No, not Lasciel.) is partly responsible for bringing Harry back. I actually really liked it.

I didn't even give the TV show a try, I knew it was going to suck.

Ghost Story was slower, but it was a very interesting book where there was a lot going on that wasn't explicitly stated...

Still want him to hurry up & put out Cold Days already.

Walking Dead. Falling Skies. Terra Nova. They all have fairly large casts of forgettable characters. Hell on Wheels, on the other hand, is surprisingly compelling. Even the "bad guys" are pretty interesting.

Yup. All that annoyed me too. I wished they would've let Bob act more like he was in the books than what they had him do for the show. I would've liked to have seen the skull form more too, but can see why they went with an actor.

I did like Bianca, played by Joanne Kelly - she does sultry very well. :) I realized later that Kelly also plays Myka on Warehouse 13 - didn't recognize her initially because her hair was curlier on 13.

Pfffft...Primer was awesome, and they made that on a low budget.

You can make an awesome sci-fi TV show on a budget, you just need imaginative and creative people working together to get the job done.

Part of the problem with modern Sci-Fi is thinking it has to be big and on-screen, or shaky-cam to obscure crappy CGI.

I'd like to see the Vorkosigan series turned into something. The extreme flexibility of story options set in the universe would allow for a series with a larger background narrative with individual stories tying it together. Sort of like how Veronica Mars structured its first two seasons.

X2. I'd like to see Harry and Murph get together, but I'm looking forward to seeing where the characters go from here, especially with Harry's "new job". I agree with what you wrote - Butcher set the stage well for the next book.

Also, Walking Dead is amazing. Not really related, just wanted to say that.

Yeah, I agree there was important stuff and it was inevitable for a cool down after the awesome craziness of "Changes". I guess I'm still being cranky, seeing as "Ghost Story" was delayed for a few months and when it did come out I actually purchased 2 full price copies (1 digital, 1 hardcover so my boyfriend and I could read them at the same time).

I too eagerly await "Cold Days". I do have faith in Mr. Butcher and trust he knows where everything is going for the next 10 books or so. The final trio of books (BAT - Big Apocalyptic Trilogy) will be EPIC!

The thing is if there was a zombie apocalypse, those are the people that would be left running around.

The smart people all moved to a nice island and drink tropical drinks out of a coconut and no longer worry about their 401k's.
