Someone should start a website where people can link to the same story year after year after year.... then other people could comment on that story.

/glad to see a big enough company is starting to have an effect on this.

This is fine, for a online store, but not good for the brick and mortar types... Make it too easy to open in there, and *poof* it's gone... Shoplifters love easy to open types..

Me? I ship several things to the house, and I love that all I have to do is open a box, slide out the styrafoam, and I have my magic item without a ton of cutting and cursing...

Well, isn't that going to cut down on their sales of this item?

I heard that beginning this year they're going to start packaging CDs and DVDs in concrete blocks. Too many consumers are getting them open, apparently.

That's a pretty... pretty good idea.

FTFA: "It's hard to get into man," said shopper Bill Edwards. "Takes a while if you don't have fingernails, you got to use knives and razors just to cut into it."

With one comma, this writer could have averted the cannibal holocaust.

All I remember about Slick Rick is his eyepatch.

I once cut my femoral artery with a box cutter trying to open one of those impossible packages in my lap while sitting indian style. I nearly died.

It was mostly my fault but partially the crimped-sealed plastic shell around the $10 memory card I was attempting to extract. I was also on the phone and not paying full attention so it was doubly my fault.

How about if Amazon.com works on weeding out scummy sellers they fulfill shipments for.

I ordered a wireless printer and received a wired printer. The printer box read "wired" all over the box. Except for one small sticker partially covering the original barcode.

Amazon refused to send a replacement because "they just ship what the seller gives them to put on their shelves". They insisted I had to return the item then purchase another one. I returned the item and bought a printer from Newegg.com.

I left a negative feedback about the seller selling something they didn't have.

Amazon.com removed the negative feedback and claimed "Amazon.com is responsible for this error not the seller". So the seller doesn't suffer at all for their switching items after the sale.

CSB time: I ordered two replacement tires for my bike a few months ago (from Amazon) which were each packaged in a box larger than the 26" MTB tire itself. Tires were not even folded - just packaged up in two huge farking boxes - you would've thought I was receiving two flatscreen TV's instead of two MTB tires.

I knew there was something about that sentence that wasn't right. :D

As for the article... nearly every time I see a product with "Frustration free" packaging, it's more expensive than the same product in normal packaging. I did once get an SD card that was frustration free, and it was great.

Even better are the stores that keep everything behind glass, but no employees around have keys to get into the cabinets. Perfect solution to shoplifting isn't it?

An interesting point about the shoplifting-deterrence thing - when I was in training for a job at Lowe's several years ago, we were told that more than 80% of the shoplifting losses were attributed to employee theft.

That is 100% your fault. Not mostly, fully.

FDR Jones: Amazon needs to get in the gift wrapping business.

They are. They'll gift wrap anything you buy from them for a small fee. Handy since you can buy someone a gift for Christmas and have it shipped right to them pre-wrapped.

This! I had the same thing happen with a different item. They pulled the feedback. And the store was still listing the item wrong last I checked.

This.

And "Unpaid Placement Masquerading as Actual Article," as well. The author's all like, "Hey, check out this Best Buy manager who admits people get frustrated with packaging. Then there's other dude who speaks with some unusual diction and syntax, but we'll use him as an example of a 'Regular Joe' who also is frustrated with packaging. Now, BAM!, Amazon to the rescue!!! Christmas Day is saved!"

No hero tag? I love the hassle free packaging...nothing sucks the fun out of Christmas morning like having to free every goddamn part of a toy from 2-3 tie wraps, zip ties, strange plastic bolt things, and glue.

Now if they could just sell dress shirts that aren't packaged with a dozen pins, four pieces of plastic, three tags, and a couple pieces of cardboard all wrapped up in a plastic bag. And that still need to be ironed before wearing...

2011-12-01 03:30:08 AM
I never did understand why package makers think they have to create an airtight ultrasonic wielded seal all the way around instead of just tack wielding a few strategic points that ensure the product remains unopened all the way to the consumer and it's obvious is someone has tried to opening, yet is easy to open when someone wants to open it
