Scientists at the Oklahoma Geological Survey said the sinkhole could have been caused by drought conditions, the dissolving of salt or rock formations, or draining of an old coal mine.

Or fracking....which also caused the earthquakes.

This is ridiculous. Sayre is about 120 west of OKC, not 40 miles northeast, which is where the earthquakes happened. Gateway to hell, yes, it's right next to the Texas panhandle. Affected by earthquakes, no.

2011-11-30 11:04:03 AM
The OK Geologic Survey Office has issued a report showing that the earthquake were caused by fracking in the area. The USGS is preparing a similar report, showing increased seismic activity in fracking areas. Cuadrilla Resources, a fracking firm in England has admitted that their geologists have determined that their fracking is the cause of several earthquakes in England, but are playing it down by saying that fracking will only cause minor quakes.

Fracking is a very bad idea.

2011-11-30 11:08:02 AM
So it could be:

1). Space Aliens
2). Fracking
3). Draining of the Ogallala Aquifer
4). Speaking the Lord's name in vain
5). Christians were raptured and everyone still here is experiencing <cue ominous music>the end times</cue>
6). A natural string of earthquakes which have occurred at least more than once within the Oklahoma region in the last several billion years

I'm leaning towards #6, but what does Mr Occam know?

A new Hellmouth? Is there a town named Sunnydale in Oklahoma?

2011-11-30 11:20:54 AM
Between 1977 and 2008 there were only 28 earthquakes in Oklahoma. In 2009 that number spiked. In 2010 they had 1,047 of them. What changed?

In Lincoln County, Oklahoma there are now 181 injection wells.

These wells pump wastewater often much deeper underground, all day and all night, for years. The weight and pressure from all of this fluid has been known to cause relatively large earthquakes, including recently in Arkansas, home to another large shale gas field.

After a swarm of small earthquakes hit north-central Arkansas near a formation called the Fayetteville Shale, the state issued a temporary moratorium last year on new injection wells. The state found that three wells were operating near an unknown fault and were likely contributing to earthquakes. The state shut those wells and banned future ones near the fault.

USGS Report: Link Between Fracking and Oklahoma Earthquakes

The United States Geological Survey has released a report that links a series of earthquakes in Oklahoma last January to a fracking operation underway there. Evidently, a resident reported feeling some minor earthquakes, spurring the USGS to investigate. They found that some 50 small earthquakes had indeed been registered, ranging in magnitude from 1.0 to 2.8. The bulk of these occurred within 2.1 miles of Eola Field, a fracking operation in southern Garvin County.

/Used to live live in Arkansas where they have recently experienced earthquakes. I never experienced any. Of course, they weren't doing any fracking then.

It's not due to fracking or the earthquakes.

Sayre has the worst luck of all the towns in Oklahoma. The massive F5 May 3rd, 1999 tornado also spawned from storms in Sayre.

and now this......

I think they are cursed.

Fracking does have problems associated with it, mostly concerning the contamination of groundwater due to the release of methane and other gases.

Causing earthquakes, practically speaking, is not one of them.

There's some good evidence linking fracking to small swarms of earthquakes. These appear to be the result of fracking fluids lubing up shallow faults and making them more likely to slip. However, this also means that the faults are slipping far sooner than they would naturally, causing smaller earthquakes. The largest earthquakes linked to fracking have been around magnitude 2.0, which can generally be picked up on instruments but not felt by people.

The 5.6 earthquake that caused some damage in Oklahoma last month was associated with a known fault located miles below the level of human incursion and isn't linked to any fracking activity. It was also approximately 80,000 times more powerful than any earthquake caused by fracking to date.

I'm not a fan of fracking, and am something of a filthy hippie when it comes to energy policy. But trying to link fracking to dangerous earthquakes just makes it easier for people to ignore and ridicule the actual concerns we should be addressing when it comes to fracking.
