Growing up - I would change the lyrics to:

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one with plenty of beer.

/no wonder that today I am an alcoholic - CHEERS!

That was great. No one can inject as much emotion into a tune as the Jewish Sinatra. It's part of what I believe makes him so brilliant. He knows how to sell a song.

I missed the part with John Lennon, and nowhere did the song mention war. Just a very old looking Barry Manalow. Did I see the wrong video?

I always hated that song.

Seriously.

I felt from the first time I listened to it that it was meant completely sarcastically.

As if he's saying
"So... this is christmas, huh? Big farking deal. What have you actually done that's worth celebrating about? The world is shiatty and you celebrating like this just makes me think you're a total tool."

And the comments about poor and rich and weak and strong, that it's not about saying that all are equal in the eyes of the lord... but that it's only the rich and powerful that are able to celebrate.

I felt that Lennon just missed the whole point of it. That he was so wrapped up in "big movements" that he stopped being in connection with the fact that people need to find a way to connect with each other on a personal level, and not on this big society level that was all that JL seemed to think was all that mattered.

Just feel the song isn't about wishing anyone a merry chistmas at all... but about trying to instill guilt because he saw it as a useless holiday. But hey... that's just my opinion I'm sure I'm reading it wrong... but it's just the impression of get from the song.

It wasn't written as a Christmas song - it was a protest song about the Vietnam War....the fact that it has become a Christmas standard just shows how farked up we are.

Bart: Christmas is the time when people of all religions come together to worship Jesus Christ

well i think that's the point of the song, waking up and realizing "so this is Christmas." But then it goes all protesty and says, yes, Christmas matters by the end. I'm not sure it's a very subtle message, so you missed it, huh? Republican voter, huh?
