The Brothers Solomon was an awkwardly hilarious movie. I can watch it over and over.

"You have got a nice face."
"Thanks"
"Sure makes up for that body."
"What?"
"No no no no, I'm saying that your face ... it makes up for your body."

MacGruber wasn't the worst. It had its moments. It certainly wasn't as bad as Stuart Smalley's movie, Superstar, or Night at the Roxbury.

Diogenes: Night at the Roxbury.

I will admit to laughing my ass off at that movie.

I really like MacGruber

Funny for the most part, but i do have a particular soft spot for Miata's

i never saw stuart smalley's movie, but i do like al...he was one of many famous people at a uso show at ramstein several years ago that i went to, and he was awesome

i liked superstar...roxbury was alright...i laughed my arse off when chris broke the car window doing that head bob thing they do

Or is it because nobody has ever heard of him or those movies?

I usually liked the MacGruber sketch on SNL, but I just didn't find the movie funny at all. Perhaps I wasn't in the right mindset to see the humor in seeing him put celery in his butt.

Don't base a movie on a comedy sketch.

Not all SNL players can make it on the big screen.

Most SNL movies are painfully awkward with about 5 really funny moments i.e. The Ladies Man

i just can't bring myself to watch a movie based on marginally funny very short clips. i mean, those clips are far shorter than pretty much anything else on snl...they are meant more as extra filler, imho...i don't see how they could really make it into a good movie

also, sandler i do love, and anytime i see billy madison, waterboy, or happy gilmore on tv i MUST watch them...but, he hasn't actually done any snl-based movies like ferrell & kattan, forte, meyers & carvey, etc. come to think of it, neither had farley, and i would've found a movie based on the motivational speaker (can't recall the name right now) to be interesting. show his life in a van down by the river, etc

i liked the ladie's man. i can't watch it often, but i thought it was an interesting plot for a movie based on a talk-show sketch

The sex scene in Macgruber may be the best comedic sex scene ive ever witnessed. Its frigging hilarious.

Beerfest?

I tried to watch MacGruber.
Three times.
I finally gave up and figured it wasn't worth my time.
Night at the Roxburry, Wayne's World. They had more plot, believe it or not.
And Ladies Man? Well I can sit through that for 6 hours as long as I know Tiffani Theissen's lingerie scene is coming.

2011-11-30 10:32:29 AM
i keep meaning to watch that macgruber.

2011-11-30 10:33:16 AM
Will Forte at a spelling bee spelling "government" with 14 consecutive "Q's" was about the funniest damn thing I've seen in a while. His deadpan is fantastic.

What about blues brothers or Wayne's world?

Blues Brothers did so well and SNL has been trying to recapture that magic ever since. They've rarely succeeded.

Lorne Michaels is the Frito-Lay of comedy.

Go ahead and laugh at this latest awkward social misfit. We'll make more.

Macgruber is a surprisingly hilarious movie. The "upper decker" joke made me fall out of my chair laughing, as did the sex scene and the celery trick. I give it a solid ***/****.

He wasn't done wrong, subby. The other guys you mention were not funny either, but they got some suckers to pony up for top-notch marketing. That's really the only difference.

2011-11-30 10:39:02 AM
Macgruber is the worst movie I've seen in the past 5 years, and I've seen some crap movies (yes that even covers Transformers 2).

It was painfully awkward to watch and I actually felt sorry for Forte, because I like the guy, but this probably broke the camel's back for his movie career. He'll get little side roles where he won't take up too much screentime (like in SNL skits where you're either funny or unfunny, but at least it's only 5 minutes).

That's been the only movie where I turned to my girlfriend and apologized for wasting our time watching it.

/I would watch Optimus' "GIVE ME YOUR FACE" scene for 2 hours over watching Macgruber again

I'm just glad he lived through his Senator Zell Miller impersonations. I thought he was going to blow an aorta.

I wonder how well a Wayne's World 3 would do today?

PanicMan: Blues Brothers did so well and SNL has been trying to recapture that magic ever since. They've rarely succeeded.

blues brothers was not so much a sketch as it was an occasional musical interlude. it was also an incredibly awesome comedy classic as a movie! as for "rarely succeeded", i'd strongly argue that lorne/snl have not and probably will not ever have such a glowing success basing a movie off snl characters. wayne's world was close...very close, but not quite there. maybe because the bb were less silly, more calm, subdued, dead-pan perhaps...yes there was outrageous stuff going on in the movie, yet the brothers themselves were smooth operators

That's what I liked about McGruber. They could have played a safe very middle of the road PG-13 comedy like most of the SNL sketched based movies do.

Instead they just went the all out, balls to the wall, raunchy, "Let's see how many people we can disgust or offend" route. At least it showed some balls.

Another vote for MacGruber being hilarious.

If you're watching a SNL skit based comedy for plot, you're doing it wrong.

texdent: I wonder how well a Wayne's World 3 would do today?

About as well as Blues Brothers 2000 probably. But it would still be better than any recent mike meyes movie.

Actually, nevemind, i just looked at his IMDB page, i was thinking of the Love Guru, but he hasnt done anything lately besides that and Shrek projects.

I didn't like it that much the first time I watched it. Watched it again and laughed my ass off. Now it's one of those movies that if I'm flipping channels and it's on, I'll watch it. As everyone else said, the sex scene was epic.

Night at the Roxbury was hilarious.

/Whew,, Felt good to get that of my chest.

Will Forte is definitely the best thing to come out of SNL in years. Brothers Solomon is better than most of Sandler and Farley's stuff. MacGruber is ridiculous and stupid but a lot of fun. You also have to give the Lonely Island guys credit for that one.

Never found Macruber that funny on SNL. And extended version just seemed like torture.

/Gimme a feature length on Melissa McCarthy's 'Linda the Hidden Valley Ranch Taste Tester'...that could be epically funny.

Oh, McGruber Rocked! Suck it movie snobs!

Agreed on all accounts. Wayne's World was awesome in a different way, especially if you grew up in the 90's. But BB had great acting, great writing, great music, great everything.

I think Blues Brothers was the exception because it seems like a movie where everyone involved really wanted to make a great movie, not just an SNL cash-in. You had John Landis directing, a cast full of established actors like Charles Napier and John Candy, as well as a lot of the great musicians that inspired the Blues Brothers. Sure, none of the Blues Brothers Band could act worth a damn aside from Jake and Elwood, but it was still obvious that everyone was working on a project that actually loved and not just in it for a paycheck.

I don't think that it's impossible to have a good SNL-based movie again. It all depends on whether the priority is cheap to produce for the sake of the profit margin, or if effort is actually put into making a good film.

I absolutely hated Forte on SNL and thought the MacGruber sketches were amazingly lame. But for some reason I took a chance on MacGruber when it hit blu-ray. It was absolutely hilarious.

Add in Forte's role as Jenna's impersonator/boyfriend on 30 Rock and his Twilight loving weirdo on Parks and Rec and I can say I'm really pulling for the guy to get more roles.

2011-11-30 11:13:28 AM
ok, i like will forte (he's the one who dresses in drag on 30 rock, right?), but he's no Ferrell, Farley or Sandler, who themselves are no Chase, Murray or Aykroyd.

Blues Brothers was the exception becauase it was the first, there was really nothing else like it at the time that people could compare it too. Most of SNL in the 70's in general got by more on novelty and originality than whether it was truly funny or not.

1st bolded excerpt: it was also made in an era of other great comedies...caddyshack and many others were made in the same general timeframe...

2nd bolded excerpt: the bb band may not have been great actors, and that's fine...they were/are a real band with amazing musical talents

to me the best acting by a musician in the movie was 'retha. 2nd was ray charles.
