No way, the Russians and US keep a much closer eye on the Chinese than some college kids do, and it's never been mentioned. Plus MX planning showed underground ICBM basing was a no go.

besides, if it does exist and works as good as their above ground trains........then we have nothing to worry about.

Judging by the standards of everything else the Chinese produce; I expect any warheads/delivery systems to be fatally flawed in such a way that they are undeployable and will blow up in the silo or shortly after launch.

Also; I always wondered how they quantify how many times we can blow up the world. Since the world has never been blown up; I figure all of that is conjecture/posturing.

If they ever launch their missiles; we'll have a lot bigger things to worry about than how many missiles they have. Namely mushroom clouds.

Even if true, that would still put them at a disadvantage in numbers to the USA's stockpiles. Either way, whether 400 or 4000 missiles, it would be the end of the world as we know it if they were launched, so this really changes nothing in real terms, except that it will be used as a bullet point for the military-industrial complex who will use this to lobby for a new nuclear arms race.

China has no reason to launch a first strike. It would destroy their customers and themselves in the same day. They don't need a lot of warheads for deterrence. They only need enough to create uncertainty that an attack to preempt them might fail to get them all. Practically, this is any number greater than 0 as long as your adversaries don't feel threatened enough to take the risk. A single nuke on a single ICBM can destroy any city in the world. No one is going to attack China.

China figured out long ago what the US and the USSR didn't. It only takes a dozen or so nukes to take a nation back to the stone age. The only reason that there are 5000+ nukes on the planet is because of a pissing match, Edward Teller, and a whole lot of lying on the part of two countries' intelligence networks.

Quite easy, considering the latest generation of US Navy AEGIS equipped ships are designed to intercept ICBMs during their terminal entry phase. In addition, the Patriot Theatre ABM systems have a 100% kill rate in use.

Of course, it would also be easy enough to detect those launches with enough time to lob nuclear warheads at a country that does not have any semblence of a Ballsitic Missile Defense System, and to do so from dozens of points on the face of the Earth thanks to the Navy and Air Force.

You overestimate what a nuke can do and underestimate just how incredibly big the US is.

The US could probably shrug off a dozen nukes without too much trouble. Would take some effort rebuilding but I'd bet Europe suffered much more damage after each World War.

Even if the Chinese did it, they're not known for good choices in civil engineering. The site of the Three Gorges Dam came down two locations, one had granite as the primary area rock, the other had limestone. Now limestone is a lot easier to cut through than granite, however water leeches through it and after a while it'll just break apart. Guess which of the two locations the Chinese picked? Yep, the one with limestone. And as the water rose up it started seeping into limestone that previously was above the water line. There have been reports of landslides near the dam already. Oh did I mention it's in an earthquake zone? No? Well it is.

Which sounds great in the Lockheed brochure.

Ok. You have 20 minutes from launch to pass things up the chain of command and figure out whether or not this is WW III. 10 minutes for SLBMs

These things are coming in at near-orbital speeds. Faster than any cruise missile, faster than any aircraft, faster than any shell.

Your enemy isn't playing fair. Along with the 5 warheads that split off the booster, they're spraying chaff, aluminized balloons that make a big radar echo, and phosphor flares that flame in the IR. The sky is basically lit up with nothing but targets.

Did I mention that these things are moving at over Mach 10, and are pretty solidly built dumb pieces of work?

If you truly believe that you can pick out and destroy that in the few seconds you have to work with, I have a bridge to sell you.

The few tests that SDI have published as "successes" depended on knowing exactly when and where the launch was coming from and their targets broadcasting their position for their entire flight.

Somehow this doesn't inspire confidence.

Short range tactical ballistic missiles != ICBM.

The current AEGIS systems cannot intercept ICBMs and asfaik will not be able to for at least a decade (and who knows how accurately even after that). Neither can the Patriot system.
