Yes.

The age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16. My initial assumption was that there must be specific legislation forbidding a teacher from "engaging" with a student at any age, which at least makes sense, but after reading the article further, I noticed she was convicted of "corrupting a minor".

Apparently, the question of whether or not a given sex act with someone between the ages of 16 or 18 "corrupts" them is highly subjective in Pennsylvania and left to the jury as an arbitrary moral question.

She shouldn't have done it and she should have her career ruined, no question about it. I'm just not sure that a criminal conviction following her around for the rest of her life is appropriate.

As for the double standard, I don't get why that's even an issue. We all know guys and girls are very different, no matter how much we try to pretend that everything is equal. Men have always had to do 99% of the chasing, heck until a few decades ago it was unheard of for a girl to ask a guy out. Young girls often are damaged when coerced into sex by older men. Young men on the other hand, no halfway attractive woman ever has to coerce one of them into sex, it's rare for a teenage male to think of anything other than sex.
