I have never understood the whole camera filming the TV thing. Do you have your camera on at all times just in case something happens on the TV, or do you record the TV then play it back in front of the camera? if so, why not just transfer said recorded TV to a format that can be uploaded? And why are you recording the news anyway? Whatever they say will just be repeated 5 more times that hour. It is a complete mystery to me.

The fire alarm at my work place goes off at least twice a week for no reason. No one even seems to notice any more.

The camera-on-TV thing has always bothered me (maybe it's somehow cheaper/easier than a green screen or whatever they used to transpose stuff onto the broadcast screen image? dunno), but they're definitely recording for posterity. I like to think of it as a check on Big Brother so that, according to Mr. Specificbroadcaster at HBC on 9/25/1978, we started always having been at war with East Asia until 7/3/1983.

You people never heard of DVRs? No, they don't have a damn camera on the TV all the time, they rewound the DVR and then taped it. Hell of a lot easier than trying to extract a video from the DVR, I imagine.

Something happens on TV, you go get your camera, go back on the DVR a minute or two and video it with the camera. There is no way to transfer video off of my cable-provided DVR directly to a 64-bit Win7 computer. There are no drivers for it.

PlayTV doesn't work like the for me. I have to either pause the TV for a second to get the buffer going or actively record the show. Also PlayTV files can be... fiddled with to be able to convert to a format I can play on my computer and from there the possibilities are endless. I suppose I just assumed other services were similar.

Recording your TV with a camera still annoys the crap out of me.

The very last phrase of the second announcer's spot sounded like American Airlines was about to blame the unions, so maybe it WAS a bullshiatt detector

75% chance OSHA will be investigating tomorrow on why the studio wasn't evacuated. Against regs to occupy a building where the safety systems are not 100% operational.

Unless you have adequate security personnel posted as "fire watches". Alarm companies put zones "on test" routinely during business hours when they have to service the equipment and as long as a fire watch is posted it can remain occupied.

Conan covered this once, talked about how often it happened in that building and then the next show went to find the guy who makes the announcements

it's probably a DVR pre-recording, and he's just playing it back (hence why he's able to record it in time), and most people record the TV with a camera because it's easier, and because youtube is much less likely to send a take-down notice if the quality is crappy.

Many people are technologically inept or lack any multimedia editing resources. So a camera on the screen is the best they can do. Modern digital cameras sometimes come with a "publish direct to you tube" button, so this is their work-around.

Brian Williams is a funny motherfarker. Seriously. Google his Daily Show interviews, or his appearances on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me. If this news thing doesn't work out, he's got a bright future in stand-up.

He did a great job again on the Daily Show tonight. It's always great when he teams up with Jon Stewart

Jon: Don't you have a show to do?
Brian: Oh I have a show to do, we call it addressing the nation. Why don't I go do it. Williams out.
