Won't face jail time, but could be confined to a mental institution for the rest of his life.

If he is insane, this is probably the right decision.

If he's not, spending the rest of your life being confined and force-fed antipsychotics is probably not actually better than just going to jail.

How does planning things out make you not crazy?

Yet their society is still much safer than ours. I don't call that "sad" at all.

Whoa, a country where the potential outcomes to a horrific event are more than just prison/not prison. It's almost like there are other ways of doing things.

Mental institutions for the criminally insane are basically prisons for the extremely violent which keep their inmates heavily sedated. These places aren't resorts for God's sake.

I would much rather be in a prison than in a mental institution for violent criminals. Listening to people screaming a ranting and raving at all hours of the day and night is like hell on earth. When everyone around you are the most dangerous people in society, it's not a cake walk. Prisons on the other hand are filled to the rafters with non-violent offenders, lots and lots of pot growers and dealers.

You can carefully plan out that a banana will detonate the nuclear weapon you've constructed in your backyard to kill off the Illuminati once and for all.

Planning does not make you sane.

I figure we can let them have their own criminal justice system. If they make a habit of exporting killers to America I'll worry.

Not all crazy people are like the homeless guy down the street who is trying to capture enough live pigeons to wear as a fluttering crown.

Actually, that guy seems like a careful planner too. Bad example.

Mental illness isn't just mental chaos. There are quite a few mental problems where things need to be organized, methodical, clean or rigidly done.

2011-11-29 09:35:47 PM
I'm not exactly up on my Norwegian criminal law, however by sending him to a mental institution, don't they also have the ability to keep him there as long as they wish? Better that than the 21 year maximum prison (new window)sentence that people were so outraged about anyway...

I'm just asking questions ...

2011-11-29 09:51:58 PM
Yes, it's so utterly wacky to consider that anyone who can mass murder innocents might be insane.

Who cares what we call it, anyone who would kill should be removed from society. The specifics of how aren't terribly important.

2011-11-29 09:52:53 PM
Uhm, insane people can still do things that can be rationalized. Rational planning for an insane task still makes you insane.

subby carefully plans submission to Fark, picks a link from a site likely to get greenlighted, carefully calmly chooses a clever headline, then pulls the trigger on a duplicate submission, executing 20 some odd comments.

Spending his life in a mental institution is far, FAR worse than being in the Norwegian prison system. You know how some people complain that prisons are like state-paid vacations? In Norway, that's actually true.

/actually works a lot better than our system, though.

Yeah, paranoid schizophrenics are well-known for their ability to build car-bombs, and use them as a diversion so that they can slaughter a bunch of socialist kids while dressed up as a cop.

They have the kind of focus required to plan this stuff out for years and acquire all the necessary equipment in a way that they evade the cops; it's the hallmark of the disease, really.

2011-11-29 09:57:49 PM
Oh no, he won't spend the rest of his life in prison, only in a prison for the mentally ill. This is an outrage. I demand blood. I demand blood for the blood god. I demand skulls for the skull throne. My anger must be appeased. I must slake my thirst, my red red thirst for murder. I must see flesh rolling down the hills, the flesh of humanity falling from the tip of my sword. I am vengeance. I am the death bringer. I lay judgement upon the back of humanity with the cruel sting of my barbed whip. Before me there was nothing and after me there will be nothing. I am the alpha and omega. I am cold death and steely justice.

Please, won't someone please think of my need for punishment?

2011-11-29 09:58:35 PM
Being insane does not mean you have no functioning abilities at all subby. But then again, you have internet access, so that makes you an expert on these sorts of things.

Why is it when something happens that has nothing to do with the U.S., certain losers feel the need to demonstrate anti-Americanism?

He was going to be held for life regardless of the outcome of the psych report. As has been explained time and time again, a Norwegian prisoner that poses a danger to society can be held in custody for the rest of his life after having served his 20-some year term.

The only thing that's potentially changed post-report is WHERE he is going to be kept, NOT the length of confinement.

Prison in Norway is basically a nice vacation resort. And - here's the pisser - rehabilitation works better than US style retribution.

See #3 near the bottom of this page for an accurate, if snarky, Cracked summary. I trust the Norwegian justice system to keep society safe from this asshole just fine.

Life in a Norwegian mental institution may actually be a bit worse than life in a Norwegian prison, tho.

Don't be stupid, nobody uses a banana to do that, they use a grapefruit. Though, from what I see from the cameras in your light bulbs, you are going to try and half-ass it by using an orange. Here's a tip: It doesn't work. I sent myself a message from the future telling me how much of a fool you made of yourself next week.

THIS.

At least in the US, involuntary commitment is typically a harsher sentence than prison. Psych patients generally have fewer privileges and do more time.

Thats akin to what the Afghanis did when a newspaper in Denmark published Muhammed with a bomb on his head -- they burned the American Embassy.
