What Plants Crave: It also makes my friend's iPhone dial me by accident at 5:00 AM...

How the hell did he accidentally hold the button and say, "call WPC"?

From what I've seen, Siri is just an inefficient google interface that sometimes just talks back rather than deliever search results.

Siri can't help you from looking like a total ass while talking to your phone.

SN1987a goes boom: From what I've seen, Siri is just an inefficient google interface that sometimes just talks back rather than deliever search results.

Its actually a moderately efficient Wolfram Alpha interface that also integrates into the phones native apps.

He just blamed it on Siri... no idea what he actually did. The messed up part was that my father-in-law was it the hospital when it happened and my wife was a wreck. You can imagine her reaction to the phone ringing at 5 AM. Thank god I recognized the number and knew it was probably an unfortunately timed butt-dial.

Siri, I need an abortion.
Ok. I found a few coathangers nearby, including some that have already been untwisted.

That was a completely useless article. They don't even attempt to find a reason behind it.

Siri knows WPC as "Oh God!"

Siri, what's this rash on my inner thigh?
Siri, where can my hooker get an abortion?

Yep, fail. In Sioux Falls, "I need an abortion" gets "This abortion clinic looks pretty close to you" with directions to the Alpha Center, which has always listed itself under "Abortion Information".

I thought boy Tom Cruise's daughter Suri is pretty young to have a iPhone already when I read the headline.

jingks: That was a completely useless article. They don't even attempt to find a reason behind it.

It is reporting basic data, rather than an in depth investigative article.
Why does Siri not find abortion clinics? Because some programmer/coder/tard at apple decided to prevent siri users from doing that search.

The likelihood that the search engine which is used is that selectively bad is vanishingly small.

IDK what the article is talking about. I just told Siri that "I need an abortion" and it found an abortion clinic within the Carilion Health System. This is in Roanoke, VA too, one of the more biblical parts of the Bible Belt.

2011-11-30 07:08:37 AM
I want to hack Siri so it will scream "FALCON PUNCH!!" when it hears the word abortion. That would be cool.

2011-11-30 08:04:45 AM
Of course. This way hundreds of thousands of babies will be born unwanted, unloved
to the point that years later, only overpriced, overhyped hunks of plastic can fill the void in their lives to make them feel important and part of something.

Most abortion clinics are not called such. They're usually called "women's centers" or some other, similar euphemism. THIS is probably why Siri had trouble with the term "Abortion clinic." It couldn't find anything specifically called that. Maybe asking "where can I get an abortion?" would yield better results.

I also find the "fark biatches, get money" thing unlikely, too. Siri uses Nuance's voice recognition technology. I have Nuance's Dragon Dictation app on my iPhone, and it works amazingly... however, if I say a cussword, it pretends I didn't just say that, and replaces it with a similar sounding word, like say, "duck." If I correct it, then it will display f--k, instead of the actual word. I have to physically type it if I want it written down. So I kind of doubt that something based on Nuance would actually use those words. Unless that particular person's Siri has learned that that guy uses coarse language constantly, and has decided that it's okay to do so with him. I'm sure that if I asked a "virgin" Siri what the meaning of life is, I'd get a different answer.

The iPhone 4S is stainless steel and aluminosilicate glass, not plastic, so you must be referring to something else.

That's because unlike drugs, sex and guns, abortion clinics are not openly and notoriously advertised.

Think about it : "Wome's health clinic" "Family planning" "Planned parenthood"

You never see "Fetus removal" or "on-demand abortion!" or "Abortion Clinic"

/it's not siri, it's us.

Spend 5 minutes yelling at your phone, or 30 seconds loading the app and typing. Aside from. Novelty I still can't comprehend Siri. At least why people love it so much.

What's an abortion clinic? I was told there is no such thing. There are women's health facilities that spend 98% of their time doing other things. So maybe look for one of those, GOP douchebag looking for a place to lay your bombs.

Possibly because most of the time it works a lot better than you think?

Yeah, about that: when I put "abortion clinic" into Google on my phone, I get, in this order:

1. A link to Planned Parenthood's national site
2. Maps to two reputable abortion clinics within 5 miles
3. A link to a provider directory
4. Links to the websites of the mapped clinic in 2
5. Wikipedia
6. Links to stories about Siri screwing this up

Not "I can't find it," or even "here are a bunch of anti-choice 'counseling centers.'" Actual abortion clinics. I imagine plugging it into Google on an iPhone would do the same.

I don't think you thought your post through. This is, as noted above, probably some anti-choice coder who decided to put in his/her personal feelings into Siri, and no one at Apple checked it. Good job, Apple.

Does it also bring up the back-alley places or only ones with a Yelp rating of 3 stars or more?

Except that others managed to find clinics using Siri. That's why I think it's a matter of wording/ location. Not everything is a conspiracy.

I bet Siri couldn't find you an OBGYN in north/central Florida either, and it has nothing to do with whether or not Apple likes kids.
