I still prefer the old fashioned way - fluid transfer

What will drugs look like? Advil, catnip, powdered sugar and a stamp.

Ehhh the only one I partake in hasn't changed in thousands of years, so I'm not expecting a radical change in 20.

Does it mention wireheads?

Funny, I just started reading Snow Crash today.

That's pretty old school. Spider Robinson's God is an Iron appeared in Omni mag in the mid 1970's.

When combined with transcranial magnetic stimulation - which has been used to inhibit brain functions such as the ability to speak or remember - it opens up the possibility of electronically delivering targeted highs.

I don't know if it'll become a drug, but you know who's going to use this? Marketing people. Every time they show you an image of a sexy car, they'll hit you with a big dose of dopamine, oxytocin, endorphins, anything to make you feel like you're becoming aroused or excited and they're going to condition you like Pavlov's dog. That way, the next time you walk down the street and you see that car at the dealership, you're going to get a stiff one and you'll stop thinking about anything but getting that car.

That's the future, man, and it's a terrible place.

TFA didn't address the real question... How fast can Christians have it banned?

There was a British sci-fi novel called Vurt where drugs involved putting a feather down your throat.

And Niven about the same time.

I think I preferred the short story to the novel it became, the novel was my least favorite of his work.

Mind you it doesn't even edge into dislike, i just don't think it was as good as say Night of Power

Stephenson's 'drugs-as-software' theme in Snow Crash is pretty interesting, but the 'drugs in the world of abundance' predictions he makes in The Diamond Age should have the powers-that-be much more worried. In a world where buildings and other large structures can be made biologically, synthesis of traditional alkaloids (at home for fun and profit) is child's play.

Big pharma should be very concerned about decentralization. We're going to see the same sort of pushback in pharma that we are currently seeing in the energy sector against the expansion of solar.

Can you imagine the negative campaign ads? Reducing you to a sobbing mess curled up in the corner whenever you see the opposing candidate's face.

I was thinking Serial Experiments: Lain. (Accela) But it's not quite the same.

I'm by no means cool, but I do know how to stop myself from marginalizing someone with a different belief.

I'm not sure if it will be possible to do it remotely, and even if it was people would flip out over what amounts to mind control and it would be swiftly become illegal outside of explicit medical applications.

It seems like almost everything else from Snow Crash has already come to fruition. Google Earth, MMOs, Wikipedia, Google, Twitter, Youtube (Those 4 combined together was what basically the Library was), those spoked wheel things, the teabaggers' idea of how small the government should be and how big corporations should be....

Yeah, might as well do the whole shebang.

The idea obviously hasn't taken off, either that or it was just a design exercise. But it was damn close to what was in the book.

The article links to this, rather nonchalantly... http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-09/23/reconstructingvision

Now, it's pretty crude and contrived at this point - however, it still gives me the heebie-jeebies thinking about what that could develop into.

a company is going to sequence my genome and tailor a drug to my specific physiology?

Surely cocaine will look inexpensive by comparison
