The House version of the bill retained the de-funding language and the Senate version did not.
The conference committee charged with reconciling the two opted to not include it.

People who eat horse should choke on a horsecawk.
And the french, even if they don't.

That is one ridiculously biased article. Should make for some good reading in here.

President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption (horses can be sent to Mexico and Canada),

Whitey let them pass this law? Whinny going to keep his promises?

I hunt horses. They're overpopulated on the island. They're decimating the grub worm population. Got a problem with that?!

Slaughtering and eating a horse isn't any different than slaughtering and eating a cow. Or a pig. Or any of the other species we kill and eat without a second thought.

2011-11-29 05:22:04 PM
I am a horse lover.

This is an excellent bill. When horse slaughter was illegal, horses were allowed to starve to death, or die in terrible, cruel ways.

Exactly. Humans have been eating horses for thousands of years. We still slaughter them today for glue and dog food.

2011-11-29 05:28:39 PM
Why is it ok to eat pigs and not horses? Aren't pigs actually smarter? Or is that just an old wives tale?

I have no plans to eat a horse, but I don't see the ethical difference.

So how do I go about applying for the job of "horse slaughterer"?

2011-11-29 05:30:04 PM
Obama didn't farking legalize it, it was a bipartisan effort. Besides, there isn't anything really wrong with eating a horse, except it's an animal humans bond with. The more compelling part was:

Notwithstanding that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter, that President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption

I'm an Obama supporter--and this is the part that makes me angry.

I've taken a quick look at the bill and I'm not sure how it does what the article says... but IANAL, nor did I spend a great deal of time on it. If anyone else wants to do the work, though...

Or be trucked halfway across the country in miserable conditions only to be killed when the finally got to Mexico.

The best choice is not to have horses, but not torturing them and allowing their deaths to be quicker is at least a bit more humane.

The article is indistinguishable from some vegan polemic and assumes eating horses is inherently wrong for some reason. So what's so wrong with eating horses besides it being unusual in this particular culture?

That was a stupid prohibition to begin with. It created a glut of horses in a market that was otherwise slaughtered, packaged, and sold overseas.

There are now thousands of horses just turned out in the "wild". My mom has friends who train horses, and they've gained horses mysteriously overnight because people will "dump" them into other people's pastures hoping someone else can afford them.

The heart and the mind war with one another on this one.

On the one hand, technically its no different than killing a cow, pig, deer, etc... for food.

On the other hand, I love horses like I love cats. I could no more eat a horse steak than
I could throw a cat in a stew pot.

Passing that bill in the dark, dank recesses of the Capitol while pardoning a turkey in
front of the glaring lights of the media was pretty crass, though. As for breaking his
campaign promise -- who here is really surprised?

No,
that is not true.
They were ALLOWED to die in such a way by so called animal lovers. The bill actually sucks because it allows for "human consumption " of the horses . All along it has been LEGAL to slaughter horses for pet food. So those so called starving horses DID suffer because some asshat human was to shiaty to send them to the slaughter house.

Next year the BLM will probably be slaughtering them. Certain groups have been pushing for it for years.

I'd rather see them slaughtered than starving to death, but the pressure is to thin them out to make room for the farking cows. I guess it wouldn't occur to anyone to cut back on cows in the desert--also an invasive species.

The only reason horse meat didn't become a popular staple in American diet is because they were an important part of the early growth of this country. People in other countries eat horse meat all the time and see nothing wrong with it. It's ironic, since the total time this nation was dependent on horses was less than 200 years.

Horse meat has been outlawed in US pet food since the 70s

Exactly. Anyone who opposes horse slaughter but supports slaughter of other animals for human use is being hypocritical...ergo it is an irrational opposition (because it is ultimately a romantic notion...which is also irrational).

I've eaten horse overseas It was perfectly fine and I'd eat it again.

Like you, I also love cats. I'd eat one if "when in Rome" kind of thing. But cats are probably bad eating because they are not herbivores and eat all kinds of nasty creatures.

I see no problem with this. None at all. If you want to eat horse meat, eat horse meat. If I can find some, I'd probably try it, just to see what it was like. If you don't want to eat it, don't.

I've heard it's pretty good actually.

This is awesome! The ranchers around here have really been suffering do to stupid laws like this. They were fine before the recession, then that pretty much killed the ranchers, so they were shipping horses to Canada for slaughter. Then they made a law you could no longer ship horses meant for slaughter and the fine for doing so was astronomical. A few people got caught in a sting operating and lost tens of thousands of dollars. Pretty much the only option was to abandon the horses and let them starve to death over the winter since they couldn't feed them, sell them, or slaughter them.

It seems weird, but this will save horse from a very sad death by starvation.
