//Of course, R. Wayne had a pretty big game Sunday. Don't know if I'd be going away from Painter right now.

This guy would have been fired at the end of the season anyway. Their just giving him the hatchet early to take the heat off of the real problem, Caldwell, for plausible deniability so they can continue in their quest to get the #1 pick:.
Seems like they should have done it after the Patriots put up 500+ yards and over 40 points, but then Caldwell isn't exactly notable for his intelligence anyway.

Five more games to perfection.

@........... New England Patriots Patriots offense too much for them, a certain loss
@........... Baltimore Ravens Ravens defense too much for them, a certain loss
home....... Tennessee Titans The Titans have CJ2K back and are will be desperate for a playoff berth, a certain loss
home....... Houston Texans Who knows with their new quarterback, but they still have to beat the defense
@........... Jacksonville Jaguars Who knows with their new coach, but they still have to beat the defense

So it's going to be the same as the failed perfect season, only in reverse. A perfect slate going into the last two games.
Still, so long as they keep Caldwell around, they have a shot.

Why would a team with the worst offense in the league fire its defensive coordinator?

I'll answer that question as soon as I decipher Irsay's tweet about it...

Lemme get this straight... the Colts fired their DEFENSIVE Coordinator, and have swapped their QB for Dan-f**king-Orlovsky from the 0-16 Detroit Lions?

My head hurts. My head literally f**king hurts.

Has NO ONE in that office thought of kicking out Jim Caldwell, or the OFFENSIVE Coordinator, or Jim Caldwell, or the GM?

Hey, here's an idea, Indy. You can have it free of charge, and can even claim that you though of it yourselves:

FIRE JIM F**KING CALDWELL!!! >:O

Honestly, I don't think Jim Caldwell deserves all the blame for how the season has gone. Peyton Manning was clearly the necessary ingredient for the team's success. He was the de facto offensive coordinator and ran one of the most complicated offenses in the NFL. Because they were very efficient and often played with the lead, that allowed the defense to play to its strength of being very aggressive in attacking the QB and going for turnovers. The offense is terrible when they don't have a guy who can call the plays at the line, and that makes their defense play a style that doesn't work for them since they're frequently playing from behind.

2011-11-29 04:19:38 PM
FTA: "We feel this is the most effective and realistic way to move forward and win games throw our defense into chaos and clinch losing for the rest of this season," Caldwell said.

fixed for accuracy

2011-11-29 04:21:46 PM
Ever since Caldwell's milquetoast game management against the Saints in the Super Bowl I have been waiting for them to come up with a reason to boot him. Demote him to defensive coordinator and get a coach who plays to win instead of playing to protect his job.

To be fair, while Orlovsky certainly isn't a more than a career backup, he's been put in incredibly poor positions to have any degree of success for his entire career. Sucks being the backup on perennial losers.

That's a very well-put opinion. Also, it's wrong.

Caldwell banked the success of his team every year that he's coached Indy on Peyton Manning. He did nothing to improve the offense, running game, and the mere thought of needing a competent back-up QB never crossed his mind.

I saw this situation coming for 2 years now, that if something were to happen to Manning the Colts had no "Plan B". What I failed to predict, however, was Caldwell being such a gutless twat and give up on the season entirely. But, for reasons beyond my comprehension, people keep covering his a** and shifting the blame to other players and personnel.

Tony Dungy wouldn't have pull this "mulligan" B.S. The Colts woes this year begin and end with Jim Caldwell.

The lack of backup QB preparation goes back to the assistants that were around under Dungy though. From Ron Jaworski's book:

"Jon [Gruden] asked Tom [Moore, the Colts offensive coordinator,] why he wasn't giving some snaps to Peyton's backups...He looked at us both in the eye, paused for a moment, then said in that gravelly voice of his, "Fellas, if '18' goes down, we're f**ked. And we don't practice f**ked.""

I want them to go into the last two games and then since the first pick is locked up bench their starters (so they don't get hurt), then watch as the backups accidentally win and blow the perfect season.

Serious Black: He was the de facto offensive coordinator and ran one of the most complicated offenses in the NFL.

That's actually a myth. The Colts offense is very simple. They pretty much run two personnel groups, and their playbook is rather thin. It's based on a few simple, solid concepts- but the biggest piece is that the QB has to be able to read exactly what the defense is doing.

This. Here.

It's also why I don't think Peyton wouldn't make a very good coach. What he (and other QB's like Brady) do well is figuring out how to exploit a defense. It's something that I believe they were born with, you can't coach that into a player.

Andrew Luck also shows some of that.

This, Manning probably wouldn't have done all the play calling if they had used more moving parts, and had a more complex offense. It would have been to much to keep track of.

Fellas, you're underestimating the importance of Dan Orlovsky's job.

In most cases a team has to give up a player to get a first-round draft pick. You hire Dan Orlovsky to get you that #1 draft pick. He's no Peyton Manning, but I'd say his job is more important than, say, Tarvaris Jackson's.

Ugh, someone who thinks countless hours of preparation, mind-numbing analysis in the video room and being a lifelong student of the game is some bullshiat Zen genetic thing. Yeah, Peyton totally works, like, only a few hours a week and that's during the season. He was TOTALLY born with this magical ability to read defenses.

Manning would make a crappy coach because what he does when he's standing in front of the defense is quite different from what any coach does, and isn't done by most teams in the country at any level. The guy isn't likely to relate to a QB who can't do what he does.

All the studying in the world doesn't help if you're too dumb to make sense of it. Yes I do think it's a FSM-given talent in some people.

[citation needed]

The colts run a massively complicated SYSTEM. LIsten to the players and coaches talk about it. They don't run a traditional "play book." they base most everything on the look of the defense. A single play may include about 5 different adjustments to blocking assignments, running lanes, snap count, receiver routes, etc. Manning may change a single players route, or he may change an entire "play" at the line of scrimmage to beat whatever the defense is showing him.

It's not a simple offense, at all. Listen to the pundits (the actual knowledgeable ones) talk about it, they too talk about how complicated it is to run.

I'm gonna guess he'll have to have someone that's willing to work at it (most people are) and that he'll be able to teach it. All the receivers seemed to learn it - most QBs are smarter than most WRs.

/wonder what Sorgi would've done, he actually had a few years as Manning's understudy

While I would like to see that as well, as a guaranteed number one pick, you could end up on a much worse team than the Colts. Maybe I'm over-estimating the Manning-less Colts or overestimating Luck as a Manning replacement.

Yeah, I guess since Caldwell played under that coach, he had some guilt over it compounded by the fact he was driving the bus he threw him under.

Luck better not take as long to warm up in Indy as Manning. Even Peyton went 3-13 his first year with the club. I can't take 2 losing Colts seasons in a row.

Two things about living in Indiana that used to be farking gospel this time of year:

1) Everbody forgets what snow is and the first big dump = slide off city
2) The Colts win the AFC South.
