No.

The stereotype you're running with is from eating lots of vegetables.

I have a very arcane and exotic theory - something happened to cause an explosion, and the woman is not being entirely (or, possibly, at all) truthful about what.

FTA - The woman told investigators was cooking tofu and had rinsed out the pan with water when there was explosion. The blast was so powerful that it blew a 4 by 6 window out of the building and onto the street, Corah said.

The woman was unable to help, saying she had been cooking tofu and rinsed off the pan, Corah said.

Maybe she was cooking tofu and she rinsed out the pan. Maybe they should ask Corah.

I would expect this from The Statesman Journal but not The Oregonian.

I had a chili explosion once. It bubbled and went everywhere. The ceiling, walls, floor, even found some down the hall. I wasn't in the kitchen when it happened, thank god. Didn't cause 15K in damage, though. Just a lot of cleaning.

My money says that by "Rinsing off the pan," she meant "Trying to douse an oil fire with water."

Its not bad in certain dishes. My mother in law makes a spicy korean soup and it just kind of absorbs the flavor of everything around it. Texture is a little harder to get used to.

Frozen food + nearly smoking oil = fire.

Is it possible if frozen food + oil + heavy dutch oven with lid = explosion?

Difficulty:
How does one put frozen food into the oil with the dutch oven lid closed?

Did she have a "smart" meter electric meter? They've been known to cause fires/explosions:

3 PG&E Smart Meters Explode at Santa Rosa Mall

According to the incident report from the Santa Rosa Fire Department on April 7, firefighters found the electrical room at the Santa Rosa Mall "charged with smoke" and "upon investigation found 3 PG&E meters that had blown off the electrical panel causing damage to the interior wiring of the electrical panel. A fire was still smoldering.."

The cause of the fire is listed as equipment failure and arcing coming from the switchgear area, and transformer vault.

According to a Press Democrat article, Santa Rosa Battalion Chief Jack Piccinini described the scene as a "meltdown".

EMF Safety Network has been informed that the electrical room was filled with Smart Meters, which have been reported to explode and catch fire in other areas, including Bakersfield, El Cerrito, Berkeley, Oregon, Virginia, Texas, Canada and New Zealand. Inspectors in Maine and Australia found thousands of homes were at risk for electrical hazards from Smart Meter installations.

PG&E has admitted Smart Meters have interfered with GFCI and AFCI's, which are electrical devices designed to protect against fires and shocks.

"Smart Meters are dangerous and PG&E and the CPUC should act now to stop the installation" states Sandi Maurer, EMF Safety Network.

You should try 1/2" or 1" tofu blocks with all 4 sides seared crisp. They're sooooo good in soup and stirfry.

Oh, I forgot to mention, Do make sure that the tofu purchased is firm or rate for stir fry. The ones rated for soup is too soft to fry in the way I described.

Do you cut all your tofu into tetrahedrons?

Press as much water out of the tofu as you can. Freeze. Thaw. Use as normal.

/gives it a texture I can only describe as "meaty"
//tempeh is still way better

Agreed.

If she was attempting to cook beans for *making* tofu ... in a pressure cooker ... this can get very splody.

Whatever the cause, I don't think the lady wants to admit what really happened.

She was cooking soy beans in a pressure cooker and all the safety measures were defeated by the expanding beans as they swelled and sealed them shut. There is an enzyme in soy beans that breaks down the soy fats and gives the uncooked soy bean mixture an unpleasant paint thinner scent. My pressure cooker has three escapes including a low melting point metal plug but they can all be blocked by cooking rice, beans or pasta which the instructions point out and tell you not to do. The pot overheated and exploded as the beans blocked the exits or the beans swelled enough to mechanically rupture the pot which then exploded. She's definitely lying about the whole rinsing out the pan thing.

You can rupture a sink's J-trap by siphoning it dry and then filling it with uncooked rice and tamping it down and then covering it with water. It's an old renters trick if you don't get your deposit back.

"Could steam have put that much pressure on a window?" Corah wonders. "Everyone from the chief on is puzzled.

I initially read that as "from the chef on", which would have worked, too -- except that as others have already pointed out, the woman is surely holding back some relevant details.
