From TFA: Megawatt beam to disintegrate the red planet's pinheads

God damn it NASA, we have pinheads here who need to disintegrate. Although I applaud opening new fronts in the War on Trolls, let's deal with the home planet first.

So it is fully armed and operational?

If the headlines had read "Nuclear-powered robot with laser disintegration beam blasts off for Mars" instead of "NASA launches Curiosity probe" NASA wouldn't have problems with funding.

I always read the word lazer in Dr. Evils voice.

They built a giant lazer?

HA HAAA!!! Got the drop on you with *MY* disintegrating pistol!

And brother, when it disintegrates, it disintegrates!

In before Russia and/or China threatens to shoot down American rockets due to illegal militarization of space. Actually, probably not, it just hasn't hit the news yet.

This will be news when they can make it small and light enough to mount on a shark's head.

You are jizzing over the laser and not the dam rover itself? Come on man those rovers are the best thing to happen to space exploration since Apollo program. This is NASA at it's best, if they actually manage to get the thing onto the surface of Mars and not splatter it all over the landscape. The laser is a nifty tool, but the rest of the 1 ton nuclear powered roving science lab is more amazing.

NASA's just preparing it for the next encounter with these things:

Nah, then certain wackos would be crying, it will crash and then terrorists will have a nuke.

That's cool and all, but wake me up when we have stargates.

I didn't know sharks could live on Mars.

That's the beauty of it. Just tell them that you can rig it up to self destruct if it crashes in certain parts of the world. That way NASA can get the funding they need, and the wackos can have their glass parking lot dreams as well!

Sort of a reverse War of the Worlds?

"Now and again a light like the beam of a warship's searchlight swept the common, and the Heat Ray was ready to follow..."

Why must so many British newspapers and news-sites persist in using that irritating term "boffin"? (As far as I've seen, nearly the equivalent of "egghead", but often with marginally less outright contempt, and perhaps a bit more condescending fondness -- "Oh, those zany boffins, they think up the darndest things!").

/rags on this side of the sea have their own annoying habits; I'm not claiming otherwise
