Still an app and not built-in to the hardware? Ho-hum.

2011-11-29 11:18:37 AM
but does it have an ipod in it?

1) Hold Search.
2) Say "Call Burger Shack".
3) Order food.
4) Remind yourself that "Burger Shack is not in my contacts list."

I've been doing this for a year. The phone googles what I tell it to call, and calls the closest match that's physically closest to me.

2011-11-29 12:35:37 PM
Just downloaded it. Opened it up and it puked and had to force close. Siri-al killer I think not.

... built into the hardware? That sounds like a terrible idea. Are you sure the word you're looking for isn't "OS" or maybe "firmware"?

This doesn't make any sense. What are you looking for here, an enormous ASIC that has common phrases in the silicon?

When you do nothing but define yourself as "the [X] killer" or "[X]'s first real competition", you basically give over your brand identity to [X]. You are defined not by your success, but the success of a competitor. How about you just make a decent product and let me decide what kills what in the marketplace for once?

Doesn't seem to be available yet in Canada, but I downloaded some other third party app (Speaktoit Assistant) that was awful.

2011-11-29 12:44:53 PM
I already have Speaktoit Assistant for my Thunderbolt.

/VE, cos why not?

I've been using the voice software built into Android for a long time. It works really well and based on my wife's iPhone experience it seems to work just as well as Siri,

1. Hold Search
2. Speak
3. ???
4. Profit

2011-11-29 12:52:15 PM
Not on my market. Tired of the filter market bullshiat

Um, doesn't that just search? I guess I've never actually tried it, but I assume I can't say "Schedule an alarm for 1 hour from now" or "play some Beethoven."

So basically, it's something else that will track what sites I go to, what I like to buy, what movies I like to watch, where I live, just to tailor more marketing stuff to my area. No thanks.

/Also, information overload? I call it having plenty of options.

But you can't meander around the question because you long for interaction with another being like you can with an iPhone 4S:

"Hi Siri. I'm starving after my 20 block hike to that TERRIBLE gallery exhibit. I can't believe D'Aria actually got her junk collection displayed as 'art'. Anyways, I'm totally craving a greasy cheeseburger right now. I know that totally negates that hour of hot yoga I did this morning but I'm just so angry!"

"I found 7 cheeseburger restaurants... 2 of them are near you. I've sorted them by rating:"

"Please hold me."

I'm not an idiot so I'm able to use the voice features my phone already has. If I want to have a fluid conversation with something, I'll go make a friend. My phone is a tool, not my buddy.

Stop trying to compete with stupid things on the iPhone that don't serve any useful purpose and figure out how to give me native Cisco VPN access without rooting the farking phone.

If I wanted a goddamn iDevice I'd have bought a goddamn iDevice. Stop trying to make what I bought into one.

The part that made me go "WTF" was during the commercial the guy that was walking had Siri read his text messages to him. Guess he cant walk and read or jsut one lazy mfer.

Meh. I've got a friend who plays the Apple fanboy role and I made it my mission to deflate his hype. Not out of any particular bias, but because it annoyed me. Unfortunately, this amuses him as well, so he comes to me the moment he gets a piece of Apple-related news. It's a sad cycle which has left me with some kneejerk responses.

It was Apple that packaged the code in an elegant and useable way for the masses. Innovation comes in many different ways, don't be a tool.

They were not the first. It has been done dozens of times, but Apple is the first company with enough name recognition to successfully market the idea. People don't like change... unless it's hip, and Apple is very hip.

Jesus, did you need a giant sign that said THIS IS A TROLL POST? It was pretty obvious, but you fell for it. Take the hit droidboi. If you really thought I wasn't trolling from the get go, you wouldn't have spent a paragraph backpedaling.

The Siri app wasn't nearly as comprehensive or integrated as it is now. I do see your point, but there is still a big difference. Add to it Apple's excellent marketing and now the masses are exposed to something only a few thousand may have been before. I personally never heard of the Siri until after it was announced for the 4S. The marketing is also a key ingredient here. If you look at Motorola, their commercials look like a trailer for the next Michael Bay movie. I suppose a futuristic motorcycle sticking into the side of an armored car and theft of a case should illustrate to the masses why they should buy a razr. Samsung.... they try to make fun of the small minority of iDevice owners that like to wait in line on launch day. Now look at all of Apples iPhone or iPad commercials. They simply show people what you can do with the product.... and I think that is the third key ingredient. 1 you have to implement the tech. 2 it has to be well implemented, easy to use, and hopefully (just work). And 3 you have to let people know about it, give them a demo, illustrate how it can potentially enrich their lives. Why no other company has figured that simply recipe out yet is beyond me.

iDevices have had native Cisco VPN access for years. Maybe they should stay the course.

I'm pretty the phrase "_____ killer" is the tech equivalent of "That new band _______ is going to be the next Beatles."

/ Oh, "The Knack," I had such high hopes for you.
