How is this not kiddie war porn? Seriously, this is a family moment, and I'm happy for them, but Jesus, filming a kid who doesn't know if her dad's going to be dead tomorrow in this situation just feels like so much exploitation.

I am such a sucker for these stories.

Bring them home, bring them all home please.

Yes, yes. Let's all worship our military heroes. This is good for our culture.

So you're saying that it was a waste of your time that someone recorded this happy moment?

1. Dust in here, all that.

2. Really makes the point of how hard it is on the kids. Those were tears of released sadness of dad not being there. I am not sure it is a good idea for soldiers to have kids when they could be deployed; or for those who have kids to become soldiers. Let those who don't have a small life in their hands take those risks; you have more important things at home to deal with.

I am sure this will anger some soldier parents but I do feel that way.

If this encourages even a single person to join up, it will have been worth it.

I would think you could be a little more sensitive, what with childhood obesity being so rampant in this country.

That's all well and good, but these stories need to stop. Sure, we can be happy that some kids parent returned home alive and well, but isn't it kind of a slap in the face of the kids whose parents came home in a box?

Meh. I'll be interested when one of these kids tells his parent to FOAD for leaving him twisting in the wind about when he's due to be rotated back.

I'll admit that it's been a while since I heard someone spew "thank you for your service". But to say the patina has rubbed off is to simply be mistaken.

I would hope that is another kid in the class lost a parent, the teacher would let the parents know when they called to let the teacher know about the surprise. If no one in the class lost a parent, it's a non-issue.

True dat. Why not bring the rest of them home and make the another hundred thousand families just as happy?

Yeah, these are a pretty neat blend of heartstrings-tugging and blatant audience manipulation.

I suspect that for every one of these we see, there are a dozen more that go like this:

PRINCIPAL: Everyone, we have a special surprise for one of our students... let's all welcome home a true American hero, defending our freedoms in Afghanistan, Spc. Joe Schmoe, father of Jenny Schmoe!
JENNY: What the hell? Dad, why would you... um... yay Dad. Good to see you.

for some reason i felt angry at the teacher who said "well hug him" after she asked who it was and she said it was her daddy. it wasnt like she didn't just cry while being held in his arms. it's like the teacher just didnt know how to handle that great little moment.

That's exactly what Americans do. We are a militaristic culture, where soldiers are practically elevated to sainthood. In most cases, they don't deserve it. 99.999% of them are not heroes, and they've done exactly fark all in the past few decades to "protect our freedom". The ACLU has done more for American freedom than the military ever has.

American military worship is tired and needs to END.

God dammit I teared up.

You all can argue all day long about who should be soldiers, when they should come home, if this is appropriate, and a million other things.

But fark you. This pulled at your heart strings a little and you know it. If it didnt, you simply arent human.

I absolutely love these stories and videos. As a former military brat I'm so familiar with this young lady's emotions towards her dad! I was the exact same way with my dad. Dad's have that effect on their little girls! I never get away from stories like this without tissues! I hope he continues to come home as do I hope for all the rest of our hero soldiers!

You'll lose your silly bet. Record away. What I don't like is the posting and saying "awww, you're just a mean old grinch if you don't like me publicly showing a child being emotionally torn apart alive. Shame on you for thinking this should be a private home video and not a blatant way to get more eyeballs on my site."

I agree wholeheartedly. Stupid ass teacher should STFU and let the father-daughter have their moment. No one cares about the teacher's thoughts at that point anyhow.

Nice. Now refute anything I said. We put the military up on a pedestal. Every damn day we're reminded of how anybody that's ever worn an American uniform is among the most heroic heroes who ever heroed in the history of heroism, and how if you question them in any way, you must obviously hate America and blah blah blah. Anybody that has ever studied history at all knows how dangerous that is, and what it ultimately leads to.
