Vegemite only for me. Marmite isn't salty enough.

Unfortunately I can't eat my Vegemite in peace. My stupid cat loves the stuff and will try anything possible just to have some including biting and scratching me.

lyndsayj: English Marmite is nasty, nasty stuff. Way too salty, even for this Australian who grew up on Vegemite. And why is it all gooey and runny? Yeast spreads should be thick and dense.

Now, Australian/NZ Marmite... THAT'S the way to go. Has delicious caramel notes and a really rich flavour. My favourite sandwich is Aussie Marmite and lettuce on fresh, buttered bread. The crisp, cold lettuce dilutes the saltiness of the Marmite, adds a bit of sweetness and has a great texture to boot.

/if only I had some fresh bread and lettuce right now

Yeast extract is what our food manufacturers add to food when they want it to contain MSG without actually having MSG on the label. Not sure if I'd be willing to eat that stuff, regardless of how much vitamin b it has.

I enjoy Marmite in small doses, usually with butter on toast, but sometimes I enjoy pairing it with a good strong cheddar. It reminds me of a somewhat salty brown gravy.

I never got to try the Guinness edition they did a few years back. They should make that again.

I know that feel. My cat's a pescetarian. He refuses to eat chicken or beef, but will gorge himself on fish. He also never (intentionally) kills or eats anything he catches - just plays with them to death - and can't catch birds or anything more complicated than a lizard. :)

One of my cats won't even eat tuna :( I've never had a cat who didn't like tuna. It might have something to do with his grandparents being siblings.

I'll give my kitties a trial of marmite when I get home tonight and see how they like it.

My one cat is super picky. He won't eat anything beside loaf-style wet cat food and a small amount of dry food. He hates catnip. I give the other cats tuna fish, raw chicken scraps, other raw fish sometimes, and cheese but this one cat will turn his nose up. It really sucked there for awhile trying to switch him from Friskies to something healthy. He nearly starved himself to death until I finally found a brand he would eat.

Then we have our garbage kitten who is the one that likes Vegemite. He eats raw onions, carrots, pineapple, beef (cooked or raw), jellybeans, and whatever he can sneak from the garbage can when we forget to lock the lid. I don't intentionally give him anything, he just hangs around by my feet when I'm cooking and eats whatever falls on the ground. He was getting tubby, so I put him on a diet and the other day caught him digging out a sheet of paper from the printer to eat it. So weird, but he goes in for his check up in a week so I'll ask the vet to run a vitamin panel to see if I need to supplement anything.

Wishing to eat printer paper sounds like pica (desire to eat non-foods). Along with the vitamin panel, your vet should probably also check for diabetes, which the formerly-tubby sr cat who lives here has now developed after being tubby for a while.
Not seeking either Marmite or Vegemite diligently enough, haven't found any around here (sw OH). Bet only the exotic grocery Jungle Jim's would carry either, & I'm not able to get there any more.

So it's rich in glutamate, but it doesn't actually contain glutamate -- okay. If that's not more evidence that the "MSG reaction" is psychosomatic, I'm not sure what is.

MSG is not a "manufactured compound" which is in some way chemically different than glutamate salts that occur naturally. Adding pure MSG to foods is not chemically different than adding "yeast extracts" for the purpose of their glutamate salts, except that the extracts would also contain other chemical compounds. Furthermore, the most common method of MSG production is from bacterial fermentation -- that is, a bottle of pure MSG is just refined yeast extract instead of just partially refined yeast extract.

Saying that one compound that's extracted from a plant or animal is somehow different than the same compound that's man-made or manufactured means that you don't understand chemistry.

I don't know much about the MSG stuff. I did read that Autolyzed yeast extract is the primary source of MSG in food manufacturing. After I read that, I noticed it in everything. Campbell's soup used to say "no added MSG" on the side of the can, but there are autolyzed yeast extract in them all. I was hoping they'd get sued for that. Apparently if theyre not adding pure MSG, they don't have to disclose it on he label.
