As a retired Air Force veteran, the flight suits really piss me off.

I guess I'm a real pilot too. I got damned good at Microsoft Flight Simulator, and I've flown radio control model airplanes, too, just like the drone "pilots" do.

/If your ass isn't physically in the aircraft, you ain't a pilot, you're an "operator".

I used to make killer paper airplanes

2011-11-29 08:39:17 AM
I would assume that they need to have a very similar skill set, and as far as I know the 'real' pilots are hardly ever directly flying their aircraft anymore either.

Penn and Teller actually make a good case (new window) for cheerleaders being athletes. (May not be SFW).

Basically, one of the big reasons cheerleading isn't classified as a sport is because the company that owns a monopoly on cheerleading equipment, training, and competitions would lose a lot of money if it was classified as a sport.

I used to to flight testing at Pax River, it's harder to fly a drone than a traditional aircraft.

It's also harder to hit a target with a paintball gun.

2011-11-29 08:41:25 AM
How do you have a pilot for a pilotless aircraft?

2011-11-29 08:41:47 AM
I bought a self-published book not long ago. It was kind of fun. Isn't an author who doesn't have a publisher the same as a musician who doesn't have a record contract? That would still be a musician.

I can't refute the cheerleader analogy though.

dstanley: As a retired Air Force veteran, the flight suits really piss me off.

I know a fair amount of people in the Air Force because my best friend has been in for years, and that's a pretty common complaint. Actually, it may be the only complaint.

Still, I'd rather have drones than more planes that put pilots at actual risk.

Funny, I can't find the block on my airline pilot application to write in my drone hours.

It's funny, the whole pilot culture of the Air Force won't let them do what the Army does and just let the enlisted guys with a few months training fly drones. So I meet more and more guys coming out of the Academy pissed that they are likely to be flying a drone.

The drone pilots should have ejector seats just like the real pilots. Drone pilot ejects and his head gets cracked against the ceiling at 60 mph.

He's like "Fark you, I'm not ejecting"

Molavian: Why do we need pilots at this point?

Because, uhhhhhh, the pilots, uhhhhhh, are the only ones, uhhhhhh, who, uhhhhhh, can give you an update, uhhhhhh, on the, uhhhhhh, weather in a timely, uhhhhhh, fashion. And they, uhhhhhh, have great, uhhhhhh, voice personalities.

gshepnyc: I bought a self-published book not long ago. It was kind of fun. Isn't an author who doesn't have a publisher the same as a musician who doesn't have a record contract?

I have to tell you, with Amazon's "self-publish on the Kindle program" or whatever they have - I've found a lot of pretty good books for cheap. Nothing amazing so far, but quite a bit of the self-published stuff is entertaining, and it's not $14.99 a book. J.A. Konrath has been dumping pretty much everything he's ever written even if his publisher wouldn't touch it. And the Donovan Creed books are just stupid fun, and at $0.99 the price is about right. It would be atrocious as a published book, but you let a lot of things slide for self-publishers.

It's why I left the Air Force after the Academy. Not the drone thing, but the wasteful mindset that is left over from the intra pentagon turf wars.

Oh no, they can't use fixed wing aircraft, they are taking our jerbs!

But at least a drone pilot has to actually be certified as opposed to a self-published writer who can flush that shiat into the blogosphere.

There is nothing quite as pleasant as watching an ex-cheerleader turn red with rage when someone suggests that cheerleading is not a sport. I know several of them and it's probably the most touchy subject you can bring up.

Because the publishing houses have been so awesome in picking out great writers that are able to sell books!

TravisBickle62: I used to make killer paper airplanes

I still do. I spent a *LOT* of my youth making paper airplanes. I make a standard dart shape, but I cut a small vertical tail, and I turn down the wing tips. I also cut elevons so that I can 'tune' the glide. If I'm launching inside, I go for lowest sink/slowest flight. When outside, I go for higher speed/best glide ratio.
