Does yahoo have any unique services that make it worth seeking out? Or is it just people who don't want to bother switching e-mail addresses?

I'm a little astonished that people are surprised that Microsoft wishes to acquire Yahoo!, since if I remember correctly when Bing first started, they let Yahoo! serve as the back end, to speed things up a bit, instead of starting at the ground floor and wondering what the hell to do

/not really related to the article all too much

The latter.

/Yahoo e-mail address since 1996. Haven't visited another Yahoo page in a decade.

We keep our fantasy football league there. We tried ESPN for a year, and then went back to Yahoo. I guess that is sort of related. I would think AOL would be interested in a steady stream of clicks like that.

Yahoo has lots of cash. even though cash flow has decreased in the last few years, Yahoo still generates $1.2 billion a year from operations.

Well, they have Flickr, and...that's all I can think of.

As long as your grandma keeps letting them take out a monthly fee from her checking account, they will be fine.

Yahoo is unique that they attempted to to put everything on the internet on one page.

Who knew AOL was still around.

At least yahoo is good for e-mail and fantasy sports.

AOL news actually has a decent defense writer. His articles were a little hard to find, though (and only through Twitter... @AOLDefense).

Flickr. It's stagnated a bit in the past few years, but it's still pretty damn good.

I personally like Yahoos finance section, has a decent amount of information that's actually fairly well organized for something that is freely available. That and Yahoo sports is the only half decent major sports new outlet, ESPN and SI are a bunch of hacks. Everything else minus flickr is a pile of meh.

AOL on the other hand has no redeeming qualities as a user.

Fantasy Football. I suppose there is easier sites to manage and just as free, but when I organized a league this year everyone had that bottom drawer Yahoo email address to join right in. Sometimes convincing people to join a site where they have to register and all that makes it harder to recruit. I use a Yahoo throwaway address for places that require one and I don't want to get it to my regular address.

I keep an aol email address as well. It's the address I use when I want to send troll emails or post in forums that require one. I always feel it takes people off guard when they see an AOL return address. Like, 'This guys insanity ridden post must be what he truly believes if he's still using some AOL email address'.

my fondest memory of yahoo is when I was little and laughed myself silly at the little rudolph image they added to the Yahoo logo during xmas. Google doodles be damned =D

All my other memories involve having to deal with helping my grandmother with her email account there. :P

I used to have a Yahoo homepage that would come up with news and stuff when I went online. I mostly ignored it. A few months back my account disappeared for some reason. I don't know if that happened to everybody or just me, but at least now I can get straight to Fark without going through the trouble of making a click.

No use for Yahoo now, I guess...

Idiot club owner I work for (weekends) still uses AOL Email to take reservations. (60%+ of gross revenue).

I worked for Yahoo just over a year. The corporate WTF-isms I experienced in that short period of time could fill a rather entertaining novella.

I hope a new CEO/ownership structure actually brings some product mojo back to the brand, but all I ever saw was "look! prettier ads!"
