They're going to give the seat to a Republican?

Maxine is one of the less crazy liberal voices out there, isn't she? I mean I guess if you're conservative, and looking to make false equivalencies to feel better about how far your party has slid, you've got to make unfair comparisons.

I had once advocated for torches and pitchforks but I guess if all we have on hand will be bombs then I guess we'll have to break out the catapult and work with what we have.

2011-11-29 09:34:27 AM
Well, she's black and a woman. She doesn't stand a chance in the court of conservative public opinion. Unless she's singing soul music, working as a servant, or fulfilling some other classic stereotype, conservatives actually have a great deal of difficulty even seeing that she's there. They sort of have to glimpse her out of the corners of their eyes -- like Slartibartfast and the S.E.P. field in HGTTG. Except it's a "Somebody Else's Values" field, or something like that. Does someone funnier/cleverer than I am want to take a stab at that?

Those are pretty subjective terms. Forgive me for not wanting to touch that. I know the "narrative" of her always seems to point that way but I've never personally heard the crazy. Maybe some righties on fark are confusing her with Cynthia Mckinney.

Crazy is something that people call women when they want to conveniently marginalize and categorize them. They usually support that claim by pointing to highly emotive or slightly disorganized speech. I'm glad you're backing off that claim, because the evidence to back it is highly subjective as well as the terms.

Some people think it's crazy to want a more equitable distribution of wealth. Others thing it's crazy to want to cut taxes on the rich. "Crazy" is what we call the Other when we want to make him or her less legitimate, not to be taken seriously.

That'd be my guess. And let's be clear, McKinney is not just crazy, she's completely batshiat insane.

That said, the biggest thing I disagree with Maxine Waters (and others) on is her support for reparations. It's not crazy but it's pretty farking stupid. Link (new window)

Let's see.. how about:

She thinks the CIA was behind the crack cocaine epidemic in L.A.

In 2004: "We do not have a crisis at Freddie Mac, and particularly Fannie Mae, under the outstanding leadership of Frank Raines."

On the banks: "If they don't come up with loan modifications and keep people in their homes that they've worked so hard for, we're going to tax them out of business." (Yeah, shutting down bank to protect 10% or so of homeowners is a great idea)

She threatened to nationalize all of the oil companies.

During the L.A. riots: "If you call it a riot, it sounds like it was just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason. I maintain it was somewhat understandable, if not acceptable. So I call it a rebellion."

So yeah - crazy.

Iran-Contra did exist. I guess you can say it's a matter of whether you think it was direct or indirect involvement, but if you don't know the CIA are drug pushers and terrorists, I don't know where you've been.

Reacting to police brutality is understandable. I disagree with her and maintain that they should be called riots, and did mostly consist of idiots burning down their own neighborhoods.
But pigs can only push a community with murder and terrorism so long until something snaps.

Also, prioritizing a person's ability to have a home over some asshole's profits is something that doesn't seem crazy.
And while I disagree with nationalization, it seems to me she wants America's resources to be America's and not some collection of private individuals.

Put it better than I could have. Thanks. This is my point -- female politicians are called crazy more often than male politicians, because "crazy" is a convenient and easy way to marginalize a woman. There's an existing stereotype in the world that women, because of hormones or whatever, are less rational than men. I'm not saying it's true, I'm just saying that it's a stereotype out there. For that reason, it's really easy to convince people that a woman whose views one disagrees with is crazy. Just like the stereotype about white republican men who oppose gay rights -- it's really easy to convince people that they're closeted. Or very hawkish republican men -- tiny dicks.
