Odd. I have talked to mariachis who say that it's one of the fastest-growing genres in the world. There are mariachi groups in on every continent except Antarctica. I know for a fact that it's becoming a very popular non-traditional group in public schools, and I even bought a guitarrón and a vihuela for our school before I left.

/to be fair, I DID teach music in Phoenix

I'd say UN officials are just worried about the rise of Latin Ska...

Sacramento is crawling with them. I had some serenade me with a Mariachi version of Lionel Richie's "Hello" last weekend while I nibbled my basket of free chips and waited for my dinner and margarita refill to arrive.

I live in Crackerville USA near a Mexican family so no subby, a summer of car stereos tells me it can't vanish quick enough.

Why can't it be ranchero music? That is unbearably bad music.

Denver also has plenty of Mariachi music. Traditional and Nuevo. Also, Casa Bonita has a live band AND fire juggling cliff divers. Beat that, Pheonix.

Fading away? No Way!

In a West Virginia rest stop / visitor center they had a frigging mariachi band going. The last thing I would associate with WV is mariachi.

You know what else is vanishing?

Powdered wigs and snuff boxes.

The UN should really get on that.

I grew up in the Phoenix area, and whenever I hear mariachi music I both crave Mexican food and feel some nostalgia for my youth. True story.

With the population at 7 billion, I'd say they've saved enough lives to last quite a while.

I'm one of those assholes who loves mariachi music. There are vast stretches of I5 in California where your radio options are:

1. Jesus stations.
2. The other Jesus... playing mariachi music.

#1 panders to the ignorant who want to firmly believe educated people are going to hell, corporations are good, fetuses are more important than ambulatory and complete human beings, and that you are just crap.

#2 sings about "amor y mi corazon" and makes me crave things cooked with ancho and chipotle chilis

I take great comfort in amor y mi corazon.

Now the little brown wanna be gangbangers with the very very loud rap at their parties have forced me to call the cops as few times.I just dont like gunshots .

Well, it's a good thing that guy that lived across the street from my old apartment has a van with a stereo loud enough to broadcast some sweet tuba sounds across the globe.

I once wound up attending a Cinco de Mayo party in Jakarta, Indonesia which included some of the staff of the Mexican embassy. Yes, there was a mariachi band. It was comprised purely of Indonesians who learned the lyrics phonetically and spoke ni una palabra of Spanish. They were surprisingly good.

This year's phonebook for Arequipa, Peru contains four full pages of ads for mariachi bands. A friends comment was, "Wow, that's a lot of sombreros."

There, subby, that should work!

schnee: Is Los Dos Molinos still in a Phoenix (well, Mesa) strip mall? good eating there.

Wow, so you know of the greatness that is 'Los Dos Molinos'? They have a few locations in the valley now, and I visit the one in Ahwatukee quite a bit. It's actually New Mexican cuisine, which is much different than the standard (some)Berto's Mexican that you find all over Phoenix. Further, and back to topic, the mariachi bands they have at the restaurant also play the New Mexican style music which has a bit of a 'twangy' guitar sound to it which sounds awesome.

And everyone should watch this (new window). Even if you hate mariachi music, any Breaking Bad fan can appreciate that.
