The smoke made a delightful little "S" as it burned... so you can tell it was a new one.

I think it would have been funny to hear her singing, "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true...." as she burned.

For most people, not really.

For the tech-humpers on Fark and the like, you're literally choosing between good and evil.

Good luck with the recommendations, people are going to get personal over it.

Dang. I played around with both and they seem pretty similar. Im sure they can both do some cool stuff the other cant. It may just come down to which is in stock.

For the average user, it's pretty much a tossup. They'll both get you web, apps, mail, messaging, etc. The iPhones have fantastic cameras, audio quality, and get regular software updates. The Androids can be hit or miss on cameras, so be sure to check them out before you buy if you care about that. The Androids tend to get less updates over their lifetime, too. That may not matter, though.

It really is pretty much up to you. See how you feel about 3.7" vs. 4".

It's going to boil downto what cna you afford, what is in stock, who your provider is, what services you want from your provider, and what ones you feel comfortable with.

The comfort one is often overlooked. Some people hate touch screen typing but don't realize it until they have had their device for some time. Some hate phones being too small, others too big, etc etc.

I would say if you don't have a current provider, look into plans and see who offers what you want for a price you can afford, and then make the clerks life hell by trying the devices they have on the show room extensively. If you're tying yourself to a 2 year contract you'll want a device that feels good and you enjoy using.

Oh, and make sure you do your due diligence about battery life if that's an issue for you. Never ever trust the manufacturers rated life. I've had phones that lasted 5 days on a single charge and others that barely lasted until noon. If the phone you like has a short battery life, then you need to consider either always having a charger near by or carrying around battery packs or spare batteries.

Gunny Highway: I am trying to decide between an iphone and an android. Is there any real difference between the two?

I had an original Droid and loved it.

I just got an iPhone 4S and love it even better. I think it just depends on what you use most. I feel like the iPhone is just easier to use and get around with. the screen vivid and the sync to itunes was flawless. I like Siri and use it alot. The camera is fantastic! I don't want to jailbreak my phone and tweek it, I just want it to work for me. I feel like the iPhone does that better than the droid. If you want to tweek your phone to do things that are not out of the box, I would say a android phone would be more your style.

iPhone is nice, but there are quite a few really nice Android phones. Both types can be rooted (if you're looking to do that).
The nice thing about iPhone is its resell value. If you decide to cancel your contract early, you can sell the iPhone on Craigs List and easily cover the early termination fee. The used Android phones don't sell quite as well.

A few years ago Sony put out batches of bad batteries. The end result was video of a Dell bursting in to flames; although much of the media attention was focused on another vendor Sony had supplied with duff packs: Apple.

Much was made of "Apple's bad batteries" by people, which let Sony, in the eyes of the less well informed, get away scott free.

Now one incident does not make a bad batch, however... it has happened before and it will happen again so what I'm asking is: Who supplied the battery pack for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and what else have that companies packs been integrated in to (Apple or otherwise)?

Because if it IS a bad batch of packs in the wild (again) I'd like to avoid them as much as possible.

I'm not sure of the manufacturer, but I believe they said it was in an iPhone 4, not a 4S - if it were a whole bad batch, I presume we would have heard about more of them by now. It's a presumption, of course, so grain of salt with it.

Actually, if you look around, you will see that a used iPhone 4 sells higher then a used Android phone. I never said that the Androids don't have a used market, I said iPhones have a greater resell value.

Under Six Sigma processes you still have 3.4 defects per million products.

This means that under the least likely best case scenario there are going to be batteries that don't spec right. Most of them will fail safe, but a few of these high density lithiums are going to cook off.

We need a PSA about handling a burning battery.

Gunny Highway: I am trying to decide between an iphone and an android. Is there any real difference between the two?

It depends on what you really want and/or need.

If you aren't that involved with needing hundred thousands of apps, and want something pocket sized, with physical keyboard, and excellent web browsing, etc. I'd say go for a third option and get a Palm Pre 2.

They go for less than half the price of anything comparable (unlocked).

I started with a Pre and it's lack of voice dialing drove me to the Pre 2 and I truly enjoy it.

When one of the kids wanted a smart phone last month, I compared features, quality and price and ended up getting him one.

Bad idea. WebOS is dead. No matter how much you like the OS, there will be no developer support at all, and no new versions at all.

Like it or not, the best option is to go with Android, iPhone, or WP7. Of the three, I like Android simply because the wide variety of devices means there's at least one that will fit anybody's needs, but the other two will at least have strong support over the useful life of the phone.

I've been using a museum-relic flip phone for years. Just got a 4S a couple days ago, and so far it's pretty cool.

I'm having a little trouble getting the Bluetooth to pair up with my car system. Whatever the commonest mistake is in such cases, I'm probably making it. Anyone got a helpful tip?

psst.. WebOs is still supported, and new apps being done for it still, and will be for years to come regardless of the haters. Between the number of phones and touchpads out there, it's be sticking around, and for all anyone knows, in time, it might return as a strong contender, either if HP gets their nuts out of the chair of whomever buys it has a clue to what to do with it..

The market might be smaller than the others, but it's still there.

If you read what I stated, you might have noticed that I brought it up because for someone that needs a smart phone for browsing the web and a few apps, etc. it's a great phone.

Even if it does die, it should be around for a good 3-4 more years, which is more than most phones last anyways.

I'm willing to believe that most will have switched from 1-2 phones in the next year or two, while I'll chug along just fine with mine. The Pre 2 is a year old and compared to many new phones, it's specs either is on par or beats them.

Bluetooth pairing is a pain sometimes. I'd recommend calling the car's support, if it's still under warranty, and they'll walk you through it. Apple support probably will too, but you can't really drive the car into an Apple Store. At least, it's not advised. The 4S should support all current profiles, so it's a matter of fiddling with it.

Bluetooth is turned on on the phone, right? :D

Look, HP has had its head firmly lodged in its ass for the last decade. If you're thinking they'll get it out and support WebOS as it should be supported, after having announced that they're discontinuing support, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. And I'm not sure who you think is going to buy it off of them; Motorola is being acquired by Google, Nokia is all but owned by Microsoft, Samsung already has their own poorly-penetrated OS, and HTC doesn't have the capital to buy shiat (which is a shame, since they make my favorite phones).

I get that you enjoy WebOS, and I won't take that away from you. But you have to understand it's not going to go anywhere. The app store is small, and it'll only get smaller. HP may release security fixes, or they may not; either way, I wouldn't expect major R&D to go into the OS. Go ahead, enjoy the Pres you've already bought, but recommending that somebody else buy one at this point is lunacy. You might as well tell them to buy an Amiga to go with it.

Is it not airing at all or are certain functions missing after pairing? For example, my cars bluetooth won't grab the address book from my phone because of an issue with the car. I have to enter names manually.

If it's not pairing, either the menu where you pair will give you a passcode you need to type into your phone or the car manual will have a passcode in the instructions

If you decide to go Android, make sure you can root the phone and stick Cyanogenmod (or other community ROM) on. The difference between Stock Android as it is, and Android as it could be is so huge it's not even funny.

/Personally, Cyanogenmod > IOS > Stock Android.
