You say toy, I say military recon drone.

2011-11-28 11:14:08 PM
Cool toy. Video would have been cooler if they put a GoPro camera on it.

That's the coolest farkin' thing I've seen in a long time. Damn, I want that toy!

I'll see your manually controlled quadrocopter and raise you an automated hexacopter that can navigate itself via GPS, and has a payload of a couple of kgs.

/been a while since I've seen the vid, so it could do other things aswell - I can't remember...
//Not quite as agile, but far more useful.

I saw a photographer use one of those to get photos of a music festival. I couldn't help but think of what mischief I could bring about with it by covering it with those ultrabright leds and flying it around at night.

I am assuming that, in a scaled up version, those maneuvers would kill a pilot, yes?

Pity. Looks like fun.

As far as the chopper, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if that thing smacked you in the face.

That was incredibly fast and agile. Want.

I predict it would be awesome in the 10 seconds before I try to do a flip and fly full speed into the ground.

2011-11-29 03:38:17 AM
I would promptly replace the blades and terrorize anyone I saw with a model plane.

But seriously I would refit one of those and take it on battle bots. IN YOUR FACE MR WEDGE SHAPED ROBOT THERE IS NOTHING TO BE FLIPPED.

I'd like to see one big enough to carry a pilot and a couple hundred barf bags...

Finally, a device that will chop and dice my veggies in mid-air while terrorizing the neighbourhood squirrels.

2011-11-29 05:23:14 AM
I would like to fly one of those if it was big enough for one person. That would be awesome until I tried to pull one of those moves and g-forced the blood out of my head.

fjnorton: What kind of controller was he using? That was sick

An Arduino with ITG3200 gyroscope and BMA180 accelerometer. Not at all exotic but he obviously has everything tuned up quite nicely.

Needs blinking lights and a highway full of commuting slack jawed yokels for it to live up to its true potential.

Some of those moves reminded me of Doc Holliday doing his shot glass routine in Tombstone.

Soon enough I expect it'll be available in a $50.00 version that will last maybe an hour or two before shattering.

/2003: "You know those RC trucks they're selling at the kiosk at Mayfair mall? My mom is buying two for the boys this year!" Both of them broken by noon, Dec. 25
//2004: "I got the boys those RC trucks they're selling on QVC. I put them on EZ-pay!" One lasted until Dec. 28
///2005: "You know, based on our track record with cheap radio controlled toys, let's buy them something else this year instead of throwing our money away on something that's gonna break in a day." "I already bought them." "Return them, okay?" "No." Both of them broken by the 27th...

A toy streetlight?

I can't believe you guys hadn't seen something like that before. I bought an AR Drone a month or two ago. It's almost exactly like the quadricopter in the video and it is controlled from a smartphone app.

There are other apps (on iPhone, at least) that have augmented reality simulations that let you chase, shoot, and kill other AR Drones or aircraft. The thing looks like a freaking UFO that could scare the crap out of people if they didn't know what was going on.

The AR Drone pumps out its own wireless signal that the phone/tablet can connect to and it allows you to control the copter. I'm in the process of determining what I can do to increase the range. I'd like to get performance similar to that of this video, but I probably don't have anywhere within 20 miles of my house that I could fly it like this guy does.

And, these things really move. You can fly them in-door or outside and, when you put on outdoor flight and the outdoor hull, the thing really cooks across the yard.

Not sure if you noticed yet but tons of people (high school and college kids mostly) have been "Calling Fake" to a lot of things for a long time because they can't comprehend that there just might be some things out there that they don't understand or haven't seen yet in their short time on earth.

2011-11-29 09:05:02 AM
When the video first started, and it started drifting toward the camera, I envisioned the operator getting his carotid artery slit by the props.

More than that. You need to learn how to fly first.

Learning means crashing. Crashing means money.
