I live in SF, am a straight dude, and was invited to play on another team in this league (I couldn't make the games, but hey, I was invited). I look at this as either, a) reinforcing that stereotype that gay means sissy, and b) outright discrimination from gays. And a bunch of gay dudes agree.

Either way, it's stupid...I don't see how they ever got banned, I read the league rules and there were allowances for straights/bis.

Then how come it is discrimination that boy scouts doesn't want gay boys/scout leaders? I guess there is the question of legality vs. whether or not it is right. Just use the sniff test, flip the parties in question to their opposite. If that is wrong (though not illegal) so is the original.

If I want to start a private club that only allows big breasted blondes that like cigars and whiskey, I have the right to discriminate against flat chested brunettes that are teetotaling, anti-smokers. The short and overly simple version is, a business may not exclude people on the basis of a prohibited classification and a non-business may. For example, the Supreme Court shot down Boston's attempt to force a parade to include a gay group. The parade was protected speech and not commercial in nature.

My problem with that is you end up having small lobbying groups that then try to force a boycott to force people to bend to their whims.

I also fail to see how a softball league is commercial in nature.

It is not a quesiton of free association. It is more of a question of can you use tax payer provided facilities to do so. Yes, the Boy Socuts can exclude the gheys but they also find themselves increasingly prohibited from using tax payer financed facitlies and government sponsorships because of it.

The Ghey softball leagues no doubt use tax payer financed facilties for their games which brings their discrimatory rules into question. If thery used their own facilties nobody would have a legititmate gripe.
