"It consists half of people who think like Michele Bachmann and half of people who are afraid of losing a primary to people who think like Michele Bachmann," he said, "and that leaves very little room to work things out."

i'm hoping that's an exaggeration. if the GOP is really that far gone, then the rest of the country better hope that the Democrats take the majority in 2012 or that a third party rises up to take power away from the Republicans.

I cannot imagine what the country will look like if/when a party of Bachmann and Rick Perry's take control of Congress and the White House.

I fear it is not too much of an exaggeration. Moderate Republicans run a very big risk of losing at the primary level to more conservative opponents whose supporters are more enthusiastic and get out the vote in primary elections. Of course, a few of those candidates will then lose to a moderate Democrat who is able to capture the independent voters who don't want extremism at either end of the political spectrum.

I came here to paste that same quote. That's actually quite a real eye-opener. If true, of course.

if internal forces are pushing even the moderate Republicans towards the fringes then it really won't end well for their party. they'll end up knocking themselves out of the running - the Democrats just have to stay more or less near the center/moderate position and they'll win hands down more often than they lose. sure - some GOP strongholds will continue to elect the loonies back into office but the country will drift further away from the Republican madness.

Barney Frank, even absolutely corrupt, which he isn't, is a better man and better serves the American people than the entire sum of the Republicans in Congress.

Holy crap. You are deluded.

Even before becoming chairman of the House Financial Services Committee in 2006, Bawney Fwank was the principal protector of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for many years precipitating their collapse. He repeatedly claimed that he could 'see no need for additional regulation' and argued numerous times that the Bush administration's effort to control the government-sponsored enterprise's would have the adverse effect of reducing their commitment to affordable housing. However, to be fair, after becoming chairman of the House Financial Services Committee he eventually had the good sense to change his mind, but only after he was all but bludgeoned about the head, and he did develop strong regulatory legislation that became law... just before the financial crisis hit. Too little - Way too late.

Bawney Fwanks career was marred by excessive partisanship, extreme defensiveness, and a self-contrived intellectual arrogance that prevented him from recognizing his errors until it was too late to save Fannie and Freddie or prevent the 2008 financial catastrophe in which they played the primary role. By the time Fannie and Freddie failed, they had accumulated 12 million subprime and other low quality and risky loans, about 40 percent of the 27 million outstanding, mostly for the purpose of meeting the affordable housing goals he fought to protect from regulations proposed by Republicans who could foresee the coming housing apocalypse. Unfortunately, Bawney Fwank was in charge and Democrats controlled Congress and the Senate. Boom. Welcome to 2011 and we're still reeling because of his arrogance and his demonstrably excessive partisanship which continues to this very day and most certainly will continue when he starts calling in favors from the private sector. He is scum.

Protecting them by helping sponsor a bipartisan House bill in 2005 to create an independent regulator for Fannie and Freddie, which later died in the GOP controlled Senate?

Jesus you guys love this propping up Frank as a boogie man. It's like an obsession. Like a predisposition. Almost like you're born that way.

The irony is, Democrats are the small government people these days. They aren't demanding massively invasive laws based on sexual preference or what you can do with your own body.

Never happen. Out political system has been suborned to the special interests of the two old parties, they have rigged the laws such that a third party being successful is not going to happen.

It is so ironic that elections in the former Soviet Union, and the recent ones in Egypt, are more open to multiple parties and viewpoints than the elections in the so-called land of the free.
