This is what they're doing with the four hundred billion tax dollars they steal from us every year? Putting on shows in France?

Good. The Brits will have equal opportunity to be as annoyed with Elmo as I was.

Great. One "Mark Russell: Live from Washington" rerun and they'll be sending troops back to reclaim the 'colonies' for our own protection.

"The New Yankee Workshop" might need a name change.

Now if only PBS USA would show quality programming like that...

WTF Indeed: "The New Yankee Workshop" might need a name change.

I was there in 2007 and still was hearing "colonies". I nearly hurt the man who said it to me.

Austin City Limits? The Frugal Gourmet? Afro Haired guy who painted happy little trees?

TPT in the Twin Cities does not show Dr Who or MI-5 (Spooks). When I travel to Wisconsin, both WPT and Milwaukee Public TV both show them on different times, so if you are close enough you can catch them twice in one night (different episodes too). They are missing out on a huge audience by not showing these shows.

Between the various BBC channels and Channel4, "serious" television (news, documentaries, wild life etc) is one area in the media that the UK is world leading.

So this does look a little like carrying coals to Newcastle.

The BBC realized it makes more money in the States selling them to for-profit cable channel (except Monty Python; the Pythons own all their shows because Terry Gilliam saved the tapes -by buying new ones- when the BBC went to erase them.)

The station over here in Madison would play Blackadder, Red Dwarf and Father Ted in the British Comedy Saturday night, albeit later than things like Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served?

/They also had a spider baby.

No, I got that. I ignored the punchline for the obvious real-life implications of PBS setting up shop in England.

Yeah, doesn't the UK already have their own version of PBS that they call BBC?

Sure, it's a slightly different model, but the BBC is funded through government tax dollars, and isn't reliant on commercial ad dollars... just like PBS.

So, why does the UK need PBS? They have the BBC, which has always been doing a much better job than the US Commercial networks AND PBS.

Ah, yes, that show is great. Made me want to be a cabinet maker when I was a kid. My buddy who used to work for This Old House (the magazine, not the show) used to know Norm Abrams and said he was a really nice guy.

Thirty years ago, prime-time Saturday night on my local PBS station meant "Lawrence Welk Show" re-runs. They said they were "catering to their audience." Today, prime-time Saturday night on my local PBS station is still "Lawrence Welk Show" re-runs. How is that even remotely possible? Hasn't that circa-1980 audience of Senior Citizens died off years ago??

I think they refuse to take the Teletubbies back unless we give them Bob Ross and the Frugal Gourmet.

Tanukis_Parachute: Austin City Limits? The Frugal Gourmet? Afro Haired guy who painted happy little trees?

If you haven't noticed - ever since Jeff Smitth was accused of being a bit too friendly with his young male employees and Elmo - The Frugal Gourmet hasn't seen one second of airtime.

/perhaps the Brits are ok with that

Does Britain, home to the BBC, one of the most respected broadcasters in the world, really need to import serious television from the United States? When many Britons think of American television, they imagine silly sitcoms or the "fair and balanced" output of Fox News - owned by the same company, News Corporation, whose newspapers are first in the firing line in the investigation into the hacking of celebrities' mobile phones.

The channel is available on British Sky Broadcasting, a satellite TV system with 10 million customers, where it joins more than 700 other channels. PBS is also available via a cable system, Virgin Media, with four million customers.

You know, it's rather funny to differentiate PBS UK from News Corporation-owned media outlets by running it on a media outlet that is partially owned (with controlling interest!) by News Corporation.

PLUS all the stuff PBS used to be good for is now on Discovery, NatGeo, SyFy, History, etc. and those networks are already exported. All the GOOD British stuff that used to be on PBS is now on BBC America and PBS is stuck with those crappy British sitcoms from the 70's like "Keeping Up Appearances" which my GRANDMOTHER watched while we young'ns waited for "Monty Python." "Keeping Up Appearances" is still on PBS yet my grandmother's been dead for 20 years and we former young'ns (some as old as my grandma was 20 years ago) still watch "Monty Python" (but on BBC America.) Who the hell is watching "Keeping Up Appearances" on PBS????

Does the BBC show shows about history, science, exploration, and technology? I know that PBS is synonymous with BBC programing in the States, and I love it for that, but do they get shows like 'Nova' and 'Secrets of the Dead' over there? They may not be interested in 'American Experience', but I'm sure they'd also love 'Sesame Street'.

/I watch PBS online
//mainly because I'm very good and ignoring tv schedules and catching everything online the next day anyway

Some shows that Brits would enjoy, I think:

Live From Lincoln Center
The French Chef with Julia Child
Scientific American Frontiers
Nature
Nova
Frontline
Various Ken Burns documentaries
Cosmos
Nova Science Now with Neil deGrasse Tyson
American Masters
The American Experience
Lidia's Italian Kitchen
Arthur
The 1800 House
Frontier House
Rick Steve's Europe
Great Performances
History Detectives
Independent Lens
MotorWeek
Manor House
Mister Roger's Neighborhood
Sesame Street
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego
Ghost Writer
Reading Rainbow
Simply Ming
Yan Can Cook
America's Test Kitchen
Cook's Country

There's others I've missed, I'm sure, but that's plenty right there.

Are You Being Served is hilarious but Keeping up Appearances can go dive right the fark off a cliff.

/Had an aunt that acted like the woman on Keeping Up Appearances.
//Only difference is she had a southeast KY accent.

The only thing I watch on PBS are the Ken Burns documentaries. That alone I would think would be worth the price of shipping it over. Those are damn good.

I love it because the comedy is so tense on that show. And poor Richard is so put-upon. Maybe it's not to all tastes, but I find it hilarious.
