Lawyers for the mother say the county overreached when authorities took the boy last week. They say the medical problems he is at risk for do not yet pose an imminent danger.

"Go ahead and snort that asbestos, sport! You're not in imminent danger."

I don't know if taking the kid was right, but that is one stupid farking argument. 200 lbs at 8?!? Who knows what damage might already have been done, that may not show up for years.

Assuming they tried warning and providing some help to the mother first and this is the direct result of her not giving a fark or thinking her little man should be able to eat as much as he wants, then I don't see a problem.

If a child had cancer and a mother was refusing to get him treated, then it's abuse.
If a child was starving and a mother was refusing to feed him, then it's abuse.
If a child wasn't going to school and learning and the a mother refused to make him, then it's abuse.

This is no different.
There is nothing that would naturally cause an 8 year old to weigh over 200 pounds except for extreme over eating.

I have no problem with this.

Hopefully Mom is getting some serious instruction, as well?

Sometimes enforced "someone else takes care of everything for a bit while I take a time out and learn" rehab is just what is needed. The kid will presumably get some of that with the foster family, if the issue is Mom just not coping then hopefully she can get some recipe too - no thought involved if that's too hard, just "eat exactly this" or something...

Obligatory:

Did they roll him down to CPS?

Now he's only allowed to drink agnostic beverages

What do you get when you guzzle down sweets?
Eating as much as an elephant eats
What are you at getting terribly fat?
What do you think will come of that?

2011-11-28 04:01:28 PM
That kid weighs as much as I do. Darn. I was a fat kid, but I don't think I hit 200 until high school, at least.

2011-11-28 04:11:36 PM
I wonder if mom tried to give the kid salads and whatnot. Siblings undermined it by giving him crap food. I also wonder if the school gave him good healthy food, or if they gave him the usual crap that school lunch is...

2011-11-28 04:34:20 PM
At first I wondered why was this sad, it's hysterical.

Then I saw that there was no real trail of gravy and I understood the sadness...

Urban Meyer will now try to get the kid to commit to Ohio State before Wisconsin gets ahold of him!

No pics of the little porker and his mother?

2011-11-28 04:35:40 PM
That kid weighs more then me. If that's not abuse it's at least disgusting. Can the kid even move on its own?

Mom would have little control if he traded his fruit cup for some cookies.

Sure, the old "wait for imminent danger" strategy. I know it well.

I don't think the state can afford to feed him.

2011-11-28 04:38:18 PM
He's not allowed to be overweight at that location any longer.

2011-11-28 04:38:43 PM
The fact that the lawyer's argument didn't include "she's trying" tells me all I need to know.

2011-11-28 04:38:46 PM
In this case, I agree with removing the child.

However, I would add in, "Throw the useless parents in jail for a while" to the mix.

I'm just over 6'4", 200lbs on the nose, and I could still lose a couple pounds (carrying a bit much around my gut). Just ... what the hell. Seriously.

It's never the parents fault. I mean that. As a non-parent I spend my entire day undermining their will by throwing suger and crack at their snowflakes becuse I am dreaming a white christmas.

Living here in Ohio I heard more to this story. The local news is reporting that the county stepped up and gave the mother all sorts of help, free mind you, from nutritional assistance programs to a weight management therapy to get this kids weight down. And the mother just blew it off. So she was warned.

All the kids swap the fruit cup for cookies. Not all the kids are fat. This kid is not fat because of school lunches. He would have to be eating tons at home and sitting on his round little bottom all day to get that big, barring a serious medical condition.

2011-11-28 04:41:16 PM
This should happen to a lot more fat kids.

I don't care if you want to be fat; but don't inflict that upon your children. It's heart breaking to see.

I was a fat kid and I weighed 99lbs in 3rd grade. I remember my health report that year, when everyone was comparing height and weight. I was like the 3rd heaviest kid in class. This kid weighs twice that, wow.

Forget BMI -- what is this kid's height to girth ratio, in feet? I mean, he can't be that tall, can he?

KatjaMouse: Mom would have little control if he traded his fruit cup for some cookies.

Yep, and the amount of cookies he could get for a fruit cup wouldn't cause him to balloon to 200 pounds. He'd have to eat a whole bag Oreos every to get where he's at.

Third-graders average, what, about a meter high? That's a BMI of ninety.

For reference, here's the BMI distribution for US males by age:

Holy shiat. If you were that far out of the standard distribution for IQ you'd be one of those dudes with a brain the size of the rest of your body from the Planet of the Apes sequels. For mass, not quite so cool there.

That kid weighs more than me AND my 9 year old combined.

/It prolly wasn't just gravy, I bet they had to throw a few biscuits down too

Why are there some people in this world who don't see this as child abuse? An 8-year-old shouldn't weigh 200 lbs., not for any conceivable reason. I don't even think an extreme thyroid problem at 8 years old would cause the kid to balloon up like that.

A child doesn't have the willpower to stop eating shiat foods and start eating healthier. That's the parents' responsibility, and it's no different than the parents beating the child, or starving the child. Clearly if the parents were trying, whatever they were trying hasn't been working.

I hope the kid can be put in or on a program that will help him lose weight before he dies of a heart attack at 13.

My 52 year old uncle had never seen that movie until Thanksgiving afternoon. Who can imagine such a thing? He thanked me later.

I'm 5'10" (and a bit) and this kid outweighs me by 40 lbs. He sounds fat. So do a lot of you, by the way. 200 lbs at 6' is pretty heavy. If you don't have a ton of muscle mass you're fat. And even if you do you're probably a little chubbish.

2011-11-28 04:46:35 PM
As disgusting as a 200lb third-grader is, the state better have a pretty good case of neglect against the parents to pull this kid out of his home. I'm talking about warnings on top of warnings, evidence of complete failure by the parents to even confront the issue, etc.

I feel bad for the kid -- he's obviously got some emotional issues and I doubt he's very popular at school. Pulling him out of his home and placing him with strangers is pretty traumatic.

Jesus. What did they do to that kid?

My third grader weighs 60 pounds. He's 55 inches tall.

Not necessarily. The BMI fails to take into account the fact that a given volume of muscle weighs more than the equal volume of fat. Thus, people who are body-builders can still fall into the Obese end of the BMI charts even though they may have a body fat percentage in single digits. It's also common with pro football players to have an "obese" BMI (and no, we're not talking about the offensive linemen, either).

The Swiss government would know exactly what to do with this kid.

2011-11-28 04:50:41 PM
This, like all problems, is best solved by more and bigger government.
