(The New York Times) Sad Thanks to questionable breeding practices, the fact that bulldogs are "the most relentless farters in the canine world" is probably the least of their problems   (nytimes.com) divider line 197

Though Seiler conceded that bulldogs aren't for everybody ("They are high-maintenance animals with health problems," he said), he dismissed any efforts to change the distinctive look of the breed. "Change this dog too much, and it won't look like a bulldog anymore,"
...

But Uga VII's celebrity life would be short-lived. Six months later, while lounging at home, he died of heart failure. He was 4 years old.

Who cares if they are bred to have terrible health problems? They look like bulldogs!

It's a blissful irony though that bulldogs are known to have a terrible sense of smell. Thus disproving the old maxim that he who smelt it, dealt it.

Man On Fire: you know who else was obsessed with genetic purity?

The same guy who was also known as a relentless farter?

This is what happens when you breed brothers and sisters...

"And Queen Victoria became Empress of India. She never even farking went there, you know?

She was one of our more frumpy queens... they're all frumpy, aren't they? Because it's a bad idea when cousins marry!

I'm sorry, but there ain't no way in hell I'm going to read a 9-page article. And, seriously, in a couple years, these dogs are going to be switched out by the Florida game every year.

It's ridiculous, look what the breeders have done to German Shepherds.

A rendering, at right, of what a healthier breed of bulldog might look like, based on input from veterinarians: A) short snout made longer; B) skin folds reduced; C) body made leaner; D) tail elongated; E) hips widened.

You don't have to be very old to remember when bulldogs did look like that. Also when "dogs" that weighed 4 pounds didn't even exist.

/DRTFA and don't want to, because this stuff pisses me off. Even our pets are a casualty of the consumer society.
//I remember UGA IV? I think it was UGA IV--he couldn't breathe either.

Dog Breeders Issue Massive Recall Of '07 Pugs

According to the APBA's online recall notice, pugs produced in the specified period are at "moderate to high risk" for convulsive respiratory failure, soft palate suppuration, corneal ulcers leading to sudden deliquescence of the eyeballs, catastrophic lung collapse, ingrown ribs, diabetes, patellar luxation, encephalitis, Lou Gehrig's pug's disease, impacted hips, neck dysplasia, tracheal fissures, morbid obesity, cranial arthritis, and leakage of the anal sacs. In addition, due to strong allergic reactions to almost all medications, 97 percent of pugs are untreatable.

My dog is a Beagle/Heeler mix. Thankfully, she's a burper not a farter.

I have a pet supply store in the Atlanta area and in the 5 years that we have been open, I have had 3 different families go through 2-4 bulldogs each. Heat strokes, heart attacks, seizure disorders and stomach bloat took them all.

Each time the owners were, of course, shocked and saddened but it seems like by dog number 4 (and them being UGA fans and seeing how short their mascot's lives are) they wouldn't be surprised. It's sad to me b/c they just go right back out and buy another puppy.

People who successfully inbred for multiple generations are known as backwoods hicks and are shunned from society, forced to live in Appalachia or the Dakotas.

When animals do it they're "show quality".

Ours is a strange race.

My German Shepherd isn't nearly as bad as my wife's Lhasa.
He's a fur-covered methane gas factory.

The one page version (new window)

Too long but I did read it.

FTFA: "The breed is noted to have locomotion difficulties, breathing problems, an inability to mate or give birth without assistance. . . . Many would question whether the breed's quality of life is so compromised that its breeding should be banned."

IF this is true then yes, it should be banned or if possible changed.

FTFA: Many critics of bulldog breeding practices say that some of the bulldog's health problems could be alleviated simply by changing the breed standard.

So why isn't it being changed? Is it because of tradition?

FTFA: "Uga is a celebrity," Seiler explained to me as he cracked open a beer. "If we let him out right now, it would start a damn riot. He's the dog version of Michael Jackson. People go crazy when they see him."

Celebrity is one of the many things I don't understand and it makes me sad to see people "go crazy."

FTFA: Pacelle stressed the importance of educating consumers about purebred health problems. "A lot of people buy a breed like the bulldog without realizing just how compromised it is," he said. "They also have no idea how to differentiate a 'responsible' breeder from an irresponsible one."

If humans cared about responsible breeding neversubmit wouldn't be. If only. /sigh

Many bulldogs died to bring us this information.

wambu: I thought it was boxers.

My boxer cleared a room on Super Bowl Sunday once. A room full of overweight, beer drinking, nacho eating football fans and after the first one hit us, anytime we thought she'd farted sent all of us running for the hills.

Can the Bulldog Be Saved?

I thought it has been. Didn't someone back in the 70s, for the love of the English Bulldog, take a step back and create a new breed to weed the genetic junk out?

I'd love one, but then there are the health problems.

I've got a mutt right now that is trying at times (he's discovered squirrels in our yard and bays like a hound when seeing a squirrel despite not being a hound dog) but is mostly a good boy.

I want a full blooded English line Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a reputable breeder next. At just over 15" is fine for me.

Our blue heeler (mix) is rancid, especially if he eats poop before we can pick it up. And believe me, we are QUICK with the scoop. Love that dog, but my gods, the smell. It's so bad, it's more of a taste than a smell. Even if I plug my nose, it's like someone forced a rotten hard-boiled egg into my mouth, after mixing it with some moldy lemon peel and a tire and set it on fire.

We have 3 dogs, and he is the worst. But he is such a good boy otherwise. And they all eat the same Wellness brand food. *sigh*
