Speaking as a former Sonics fan, I have no reason to forgive the NBA.

I was 10 when baseball went on strike in 1994. Being 10, I couldn't really understand much. All I knew is that millionaires and billionaires wanted more money.

I didn't go to another baseball game until I was in college.

People still watch the NBA?

Oh look, it's this thread again with these same stupid comments again.

And again, it will be pointed out that ratings for the NBA have been up, and are second highest after the NFL, and only on Fark is hockey popular and blah blah blah.

So here's this again:

I won't be watching NBA for most of this season, but #1 made me laugh.

Why does the NBA normally start their season before Christmas anyway? I mean, aside from the money.

kudayta: Why does the NBA normally start their season before Christmas anyway? I mean, aside from the money.

Hell, virtually every other "major" professional sporting league (other than the NFL) should trim their regular season schedule. The fact the NBA and the NHL require teams to play back-to-back games on consecutive days every now and then, often with significant travel involved between the two, is asinine and detrimental to the quality of play.

4. You're going to get only so many chances in life to boo LeBron James. Please don't waste them.

This was probably the most persuasive point. Still, fark the owners and the players and the rest of the NBA right in the ear.

Cymbal: I'm just glad the lockout is over, finally, hopefully? And for all of you saying fark the NBA, don't act like you wouldn't have held out for the best possible deal whether you had millions or billions at stake.

Here's the difference: a lot of people work a lot harder than NBA players do for far less compensation and glory. Those people will never be in the position to demand millions of dollars for playing what is at its most basic level a child's game. A soldier could get his leg blown off after doing far more work than an NBA player will ever do and won't get that much in pension benefits if he survives to retirement. It's not that they were holding out for more money; it's that the system exists in the first place. I'm a pretty big capitalist myself, but I find the NBA despicable for that. They don't do nearly enough to earn that sort of money, and what they do with the money is a whole subject of ridicule in itself. People are pissed at the absurdity of it all.

The regular season is not the problem. The playoffs having over half the league in it is.

The MLB doesn't need to really trim games, at most around 8 games, so not really mattering.

Dunno enough about the NHL to say anything there.

kudayta: Why does the NBA normally start their season before Christmas anyway? I mean, aside from the money.

I love watching the NBA and would hate it if they shortened the season.

The season is long for a few reasons:

A) More money obviously, as you've alluded to. This comes from a variety of channels, from game receipts to larger network deals

B) Cross-samples. The NBA schedule allows each team to visit another team's city once if the teams are in different conferences, and for the most part twice if they are in the same conference. This guarantees that a fan in Milwaukee who wants to see Kobe Bryant play has a chance to do so, or if a transplanted Kings fan is living in Orlando, he or she will get a chance to. There are still much more conference games, but everybody gets a chance to play everybody else at least twice which is an attempt at balance. Obviously, doing so requires a lot of time, hence the reason why the games begin around Halloween.

C) More opportunities for players and coaches to have in-game experience, allowing them to work on strategies and evaluate players in a game setting.

D) The end of the NCAA tournament usually coincides nicely with the stretch run and postseason of the NBA.

E) Despite being the 2nd most popular televised sport after the NFL, the NBA won't overtake the NFL anytime soon. Starting the season on Christmas and having it run until August actually makes some sense. There aren't many sports operating in the summer, while the early NBA season usually has to compete with the NFL, NCAA Football, NCAA Basketball, the end of the NASCAR season, and the NHL.

Those people who complain about the NBA season being too long aren't hardcore basketball fans. If you love your favorite sport, wouldn't you want more of it, not less of it?

Cymbal: I'm just glad the lockout is over, finally, hopefully? And for all of you saying fark the NBA, don't act like you wouldn't have held out for the best possible deal whether you had millions or billions at stake.

The players didn't hold out. Billionaire douchebag owners like Paul Allen expected the players to subsidize them because the owners can't control themselves.

Pratty: The MLB doesn't need to really trim games, at most around 8 games, so not really mattering.

MLB needs to lose 40 games, at a minimum.

Marine1: a lot of people work a lot harder than NBA players do for far less compensation and glory.

NBA players are also far, far, far better at their jobs than most people and generate market revenue far, far, far greater than most people. Playing professional basketball in the NBA is one of the most exclusive jobs in the world, a four-hundred-player league without the roster turnover found in more physical sports such as football. They get that money because people will pay hundreds of dollars to see them play. I don't understand why everyone who loves the free market suddenly hates the free market when it involves sports or their favorite sports team.

Marine1: A soldier could get his leg blown off after doing far more work than an NBA player will ever do and won't get that much in pension benefits if he survives to retirement.

I'd like to ask why this is a problem with the NBA and not a problem with entertainer or athlete or union employee who holds out for more money, believing they should make more money than they do. This has little to do with the economy, because sports labor scuffles have pissed off this country regardless of the economic outlook. The argument seems to boil down to "Well, you should be lucky they pay you that much at all!" Which, obviously, would be a silly argument.

I seriously don't understand why there are so many hardcore hockey fans who hate the NBA on Fark. They certainly are not very prevalent in real life. I'm speaking about the US. I'm sure it's probably different in Canada.

Looking forward to seeing the Lakers play the Bulls on Christmas.

You also, according to your profile, live in LA. I'd wager there aren't any hardcore hockey fans at all in LA. Here in New England, I assure you, there are plenty of hockey fans who don't give a damn about basketball, not even the Celtics.

The only thing I'm happy with is the timing - now, the Mavs will get to hoist the banner in the AAC, and every single player on the team will get their championship rings, and the "Dream Team" will have to sit there on the opposing bench and watch every minute of it!

Sure there are. I have been to several Kings games. They're a blast in person sitting up against the glass, but I find hockey to be unwatchable on TV. That's just me and you won't find me coming into hockey threads crapping on hockey fans and making lame generalizations about the sport, its fans, and its players.

That being said, there are a LOT more Laker fans than King's fans in LA, and that's real talk.
