didn't he have the highest winning pct among currently active coaches? (regular season)

2011-11-28 02:37:18 PM
He was 201-88-40 and won the SE division four times in less than four full seasons of coaching. He won the Eastern Conference twice and the President's trophy for most points in the NHL once. He came in second in the Eastern conference once also.

oh good a thread went green. finally loaded Fark and went "wtf where's boudreau thread on Sports tab" and submitted anything just to be like "what? Does bruce have to diddle some kids to get on the tab?"

He's a regular season coach; don't know what it was in thew post-season that f'd him up. Maybe it was the "tournament-type" gameplay but something always slipped with the Caps in the post-season.

Though my favorite memories if i can remember them are getting hammered in playoff threads and laughing at the Caps failing. Second only to watching the expected "Philly Choke" (esp goalie roulette; that was awesome).

But Crosby won the Stanley Cup already this year, right? I haven't really heard about any hockey games since PotatoTrick came back. Figured I missed the playoffs and we went right to the Conn Smythe trophy presentation.

I will say that after watching the 24/7 HBO deal with the Pens & Caps last year, if I were a hockey player, I'd rather play for Bylsma than Boudreau. The constant "f*ck yeah, let's go get 'em" from the latter would get old after the first month.

But, it's not his fault Mike Green is prone to injury from wind gusts and Alex Semin is quite possibly the most lethargic "star" in the history of modern sports.

Meanwhile, Shanahan is out in Ashburn at his press conference right now joking about how he knew Rex was going to get pneumonia the week he was benched. And he's sticking with Gano.

And somehow BB is the coach that gets fired around here?

So what? He was the coaching equivalent to Joe Thornton.

Bruce Boudreau was the whiniest coach in the NHL. He wasn't the worst coach around, but any decision that means I have to see less of his fat face is a good one.

Good for you, Bruce. The crowning achievement in your coaching tenure was getting in a verbal jab at Rangers fans and beating them twice in the playoffs.

It looked like he just didn't know how to adjust. A series is best of 7 and if a team adjusts to your tactics, you have to make changes. But you kept seeing Ovechkin skate into the zone hard, cut to the middle, and shoot.

Not the answer. This is a team who's core decided to quit to send the message that they wanted a coaching change. Does that sound like a group of guys who are just begging for some hard-ass to come in and boss them around and restore discipline? Time will tell, but Bruce doesn't strike me as the worst person to play for. And didn't McPhee sign off on the whole "more team defense" philosophy? Is Dale supposed to come in and keep with that mindset? I imagine he's somewhat there to teach them about discipline and sticking up for your teammates, but I think right now you have too many rudderless players and bad apples. Not saying Ovie should go, but a couple guys gotta go. I guarentee any of us hockey fans can think of a few names. You have to split up that boys club wolfpack of entitlement. Send a guy off to Winnipeg to live to send a message (no offense 'Peggers)

Randy Carlyle is next.

drive me insane every goddamn year. Semin gets a fire and shows up and it's awesome... Then like... he's gone. Just gone.

redpanda2: But you kept seeing Ovechkin skate into the zone hard, cut to the middle, and shoot.

Yep. It was a "we're playing that same team again. Now remember, last night they were very good at blocking our "go down the wing then cut into the middle and try to skate past 2 defenders and score" maneuver... so... DO IT AGAIN!!!!"
So farking annoying. Never expect a Cup from the Caps, but do enjoy cheering them and like going to their games.

in other news: HOCKEY!

That is the case. And Mr. Redden graciously escorted Sergei Fedorov to the circle while screening Lundqvist on the series-winning goal late in Game 7.

Seriously, I hope Wade Redden is dead.

God was that great. It was like after every goal and every intermission, there was this "Let's Make a Deal!" vibe as to who was going to play. The fact that there were three of them just made it all the more awesome. I'll remember that as long as I live.

S.A.S.Q.U.A.T.C.H.: Send a guy off to Winnipeg to live to send a message (no offense 'Peggers)

They did that with Fehr. I think he's right at home in that neck of the woods.

Seriously though, Bruce is an offensive minded run and gun coach. You can't expect a guy to just change. They brought Bob Woods up from Hershey like a year after Bruce because he was the defensive guy behind the bench. The management got the style of game they hired for, I see this as GMGM's failure more than the coach's.

2011-11-28 03:51:09 PM
If Hunter can get that lazy farkstick Semin motivated for more than once every five or six games, this is a change that's worth it. Now if only the Capitals could figure out how to play defense and get some consistency in goal. 3.27 GA/G is just unacceptable. The only team giving up more goals per game are the Senators.

Still sad to see Boudreau go though, hope he finds success somewhere else (just not against the Caps of course)

Yep. That's what happens when you suck pretty bad and win the draft lottery. Just think, how different and weird would the NHL landscape be if the Penguins got Ovechkin and someone else ended up with Crosby? My mind, it boggles.

Well the Pens drafted Malkin second right after Ovi. Other than that I'm not sure what your point is.

I'm happy. I appreciate everything Boudreau did, but I was getting really pissed here at the end. I swear he did things just to personally annoy me, like put Backstrom/Ovechkin in for defensive zone face offs only, so they'd lose the faceoff and waste their entire shift playing terrible defense. One of those games we got womped, there was a D-zone face off with 6 seconds left and I shouted PUT IN BACKSTROM as a joke, but then he actually did it.

Thanks, Bruce, but it was time!

Sorry, Bruce but it was time. I'm glad for your time here and I'm sure you will bounce back and get another head coaching gig. I look forward to the Dale hunter era. If you wanna learn from a guy who knew how to score important playoff goals, he's a good guy to learn from. If you want to learn how to get record setting suspensions, he's a good guy to learn from. Either way, go big or go home.

I wish he could take the C and give it to Brooks Laich.

Then maybe kick Semin's ass after that.

keylock71: Can't fire the star players, so it's the coach that gets the heave ho...

When you give a player a decade-contract it makes the player more powerful than the coach, so yeah, its a problem.

Checks will be finished.

Amazing how quickly so many Caps fans turned on BB. Though what got him fired was most likely his players. Ovechkin isn't happy, no one's happy. Tough turn for the fat man.

Now for Colorado to fire Sacco. I'm not the type who jumps on the "fore the coach" bandwagon, as I think many times it is just a desperation move. But there are times when that change needs to happen, and Sacco ain't getting the job done. Besides, now it is a race between Colorado and Montreal to fire their coach and replace him with Roy.

/seriously doubt that happens for either team in the near future

2011-11-28 05:04:32 PM
"Fore the coach" is when you bounce golf balls off his noggin from 200 yards. So you can see why I'm reticent to get on that particular bandwagon.

Coaches like Boudreau do not win Stanley Cups. If you need to yell, scream, and swear to get your point across, chances are you suck at what you're doing, whatever your profession.

I was only 7 years old and wasn't yet much of a hockey fan when it happened so I don't really have a personal memory of it, but I must do my duty as an Islanders fan:

fark Dale Hunter with a rusty chainsaw.

/there are *very* few sports figures I dislike personally

Wouldn't work. Ovechkin would go cry to management and Semin would just jump to the KHL.

I'm just happy to see Dale Hunter coming back!
