the program had two good years and thinks it deserves perennial dominance. gill inherited a program that went 5-7, including only one conference win (against iowa state) the previous year. just cool out and be thankful that it's finally basketball season.

Between this and Auburn's national championship last year, I would say that Charles Barkley should be publicly apologizing to Auburn's AD. He's man enough to do it, so I hope he does.

Won't matter, they'll always suck because who wants to live in Kansas for four years?

What qualifications does it take to get $10M for doing my job poorly for 2 years?

Meh, KU deserves it. They fired a coach who got them to bowl games on a consistent basis and won at a pretty high level (by KU standards, anyway) because his players were too thin-skinned. They replaced him with Mangino's exact opposite: Gill is one of the nicest guys in college football. After turning around Buffalo, one of the worst programs in college football, it seemed like a home run he could succeed at KU. Alas, being nice isn't exactly the best motivational tool. Also, he and his staff were astonishingly bad at coaching. Hence, KU eats $6 million to make it go away. Not a Mangino fan, but his firing was b.s.

Gill was an excellent assistant at Nebraska for years. He'll land on his feet in that capacity somewhere, or maybe even head coach at a desperate non-big six school. Nice guy, hope things work out.

I really kind of wish the Big12 would have just exploded, and we could have gone and played football in the Missouri Valley or something.

What I found interesting is that they didn't let him stay on until at least mid-way next season. He was still working through The Human Blob's recruits, which would have been gone. At that time, it would have been completely clear just what he was capable of doing. Even Pinkel said they should let him stay on to see what he would have done, referencing his own slow start at Mizzou. Then again, Pinkel was never THAT bad.

I think the Border War game sealed it. We more or less tried to hand them that game in the first half, and they still didn't take it. Mizzou only played two quarters of football on Saturday and that's all it took to beat KU. I think that if it had been against any other team, Gill would still have his job. The beakers care more about that rivalry ending than they want to let on.

Analgesic: What qualifications does it take to get $10M for doing my job poorly for 2 years?

I think you have to perform extremely well at other, shiattier, much lower-paying jobs where no one but people who really care about your profession appreciate what you've done. Oh, and you have to be in the right field of work. Gill might have failed at Kansas but he definitely earned that opportunity. And he'll get another gig, it just won't be as high-paying. Remember, Belichick failed with the Browns but he earned that job and eventually got another. Worked out pretty well for him and that other team.

You could say the same thing about Nebraska and Oklahoma and yet look at the histories of those two programs.

Well, God specifically hates Kansas and He will smite them as His righteous judgment is passed upon their heathen souls. Nebraska and Oklahoma don't have this divine damnation waiting for them.

...because Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, west Texas and other football hotbeds are regaled for their high quality of living.

KU does not tolerate coaches who lose to Missouri 2 years in a row. Pretty sure it's in the school's bylaws.

LOOK IT UP, FOOLS.

\ No, seriously, look it up. I'm telling you, it's in there!

It will be a long time before KU loses to Missouri again. So by this logic, the next coach should be around for a while.

RIP Border War Showdown.

KU is not absolutely wild with expectations.

1) Don't be the absolute worst BCS team for two years in a row.
2) Win one conference game a year.
3) Act at least a little angry on the sidelines/press conference when you're losing by 40+ points, rather than grinning like Ned Flanders on thorazine.

One single conference win this year and he would have gotten a third year.

Any "he turned around Buffalo" argument is pretty weak sauce. One winning season there. A losing record overall. At Buffalo. One bowl game. That they lost. To a bad UConn team. Coming off another losing season at Buffalo. This translated into becoming one of the 20 highest paid coaches in NCAA how exactly?

I dont understand why all these rivalry games have to quit being played, UGA/GT kept playing, as did USC/Clem, UF/FSU, UM/UF,FSU.

Maybe its because the rest of the big 12 knows they wont have to put up with texas's bullshiat anymore and they are just jealous.

That's an actual problem for Kansas State, but Lawrence isn't like Kansas.

Chickenhawks are just tired of losing, so they quit and blame it on Mizzou.
