So what? We've got better tech now, it's best to encourage further R&D on that.

I don't think I've bought an incandescent bulb in years.

So, basically we should not use any technology more recent than the late 1800s, stupidmitter?

strictly speaking you can build improved versions of them. versions that existed before the law was passed. so go fark yourself submitter

in related news.. i had always had good CFLs - i have 6 or 7 year old CFLs that are as good as new, light up fast, no noticable loss in brightness, etc. I finally encountered some crappy ones - like people complain about - the apartment complex we rent from until our house is done installed CFLs in the bathroom. the damn things didn't last a year before burning out and taking a minute to reach full brightness. i mean, wtf? those were problems with prototyopes from the 90s, how the farking hell cheap do you have to be to buy CFLs that shiatty in 2011?!

No dammit, we need lights so inefficient they can work as a small oven! This is Communism!

I put a cfl above my stove the day i moved in, it still lights every day no problem 2 years later.

Yeah, I had some like that in my old apartment, I think I bought em from Wal-Mart.

Never again. I left em there for the new tenants.

sigh

does this mean that I need to stock up? for reals? will I be able to buy bulbs still if they are made overseas?

sigh

/do they make CFLs which dont flicker and have a similar spectrum to my current incandescent bubs??

I love the controversy America's dumb-fark Republicans have tried to create around light bulbs. It really shows how out of touch they truly are with everything.

They have. For at least five years.

Sure, Bush did it, but Obama's at fault for not fixing it. So it's Obama's incandescent bulb ban.

yes they make CFLs that don't flicker (i've never had a CFL that flickered.. even the cheap ones i mentioned above) and have the inferior unnatural yellow spectrum of incandescent.

why the fark would you want to continue using that off-balanced yellow light that incandescent bulbs produce? i mean seriously... get true white light bulbs - everything in your house will look better

it's an energy efficiency standard - % of power consumed that turns into light. essentially a watts per lumen rule.

incandescent bulbs are better described as "inefficient heating elements that create waste light" than light bulbs.

2011-11-28 12:17:18 PM
Edison did not invent the light bulb. Credit should probably go to Humphrey Davy.

My point is that the loss of 100 watt bulbs will barely be noticed, since most fixtures use 60 watt bulbs.

I'm a fan of LEDs myself, but the LED bulbs are still way too expensive for me to invest in. Lights that are on constantly can have a great boon from CFLs. But if they are turned on and off frequently, their life shortens dramatically.

And appliance bulbs? Especially for stoves.

I think those kinds of bulbs are separate from light fixture bulbs and thus are excepted from the ban.

The 100 watt goes away next year, 75 the year after that, then 60, then smaller stuff. Something like that. I don't have the full schedule memorized.

There are different qualities of CFLs... effectively you get what you pay for. If you buy the cheap ones or the contractor grade, you will be lucky if they last a year.

Some people with sensitive eyes can't stand them. The brightness of them really hurts my eyes. I will be seriously stockpiling 40 and 60 watt incandescent bulbs -- not that I haven't been for the past year or so. They're the only things that don't hurt my eyes. That, or strings of Christmas lights -- which are the most common lights on in my house.

I get enough migraines without extra help from the light bulbs in my house.

There's very little little mercury in each bulb - about 1/100th of the mercury in mercury thermometers that your mother stuck up your bum when you were a kid. Plus, the mercury vapor dissipates quickly in a well ventilated room.

Plus, according to the EPA, the people susceptible to mercury poisoning are fetuses and young kids. So what the fark do I have to worry about? After all, I'm not a fetus.
